“comfortable beds but”

The ladies running it are fab -the guy in charge needs to learn some manners. Having made a huge fuss due to my "parking wrongly" he then said "anyway, what do you want and what are you doing in here?" get this - I had been a resident there for a day already!.

The parking wrongly fuss was because I parked behind some other cars as it was snow covered outside and the only space was on the end - the hotel is situated on a road edge (on a corner, something carefully not shown in the pictures) if you are unfamiliar with the road you cannot tell if you are actually parking in the middle of the road or not when the road is snow covered - of course it would have been easier had he bothered to clear the snow. - wifi does not work , showers a waste of time, brekkies are great cooked by a lovely elderly lady

“very well cared for after a long day in the hills”

Roaring fires, drying room for wet kit, good whisky selection, tasty meals in enormous portions, comfortable and clean rooms, endless hot water. Perfect for a week of hillwalking in the rain. The prices are very reasonable, the staff helpful and friendly and the service accommodating. We had a great week.

“£20 - you get what you pay for!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2011

For under £20 per person per night, this price represents great value for money, sadly though that is pretty much the only plus point for this hotel. Upon our arrival we were 'greeted' by a very unwelcoming propriator, who grunted 1 word answers to our querries about the hotel and the surrounding area. His mood remained like this thoughout the duration of our stay. He also gave the impression that everything was a massive effort for him, like; serving drinks at the bar, answering the telephone and cooking meals in the evening, this just added to the unwelcoming vibe. The drink prices are steep and the lager was flat. The food menu is very pricey, if you wanted peppercorn sauce with your stake you had to pay an extra £2.95! The owners set strict time periods in which you could order food, it felt like you could only order food when they felt ready or willing to cook it. Having said all this, i cannot fault the quality of the food provided, the cooked breakfast in the morning was pretty good and is included in the room price.

P.S - the bartender liz was excellent and her effort didn't go unnoticed.

“You have to be made of tough stuff to stay here”

An unfriendly, unwelcoming Hotel, which was cold and in need if an update. The room was bijou and cold, shower -powerless. Scotland and no porridge on the menu! Two of the 5 mornings served mouldy toast. A polite complaint was shrugged off a "these things happen"! Evening meals were expensive, and v limited on the vegetarian front. (drove 22 miles 2 of our nighs to get a decent meal) Booked for 4 nights and would have left after one if we had not travelled 450miles for the Highland Games. Nowhere to dry out walking gear. No mobile phone signal. Saving grace? Locals were friendly but even they admitted only drank at Hotel so it did not close down.

“Bit Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2008

My mate and I go walking once a year in Scotland and this year we did the Cateran Trail. The GlenIsla was the only place we booked for 2 nights out of the 7 we were away (circular trail), but wish we hadn't. We arrived on a Sunday, only to find out that the hotel had decided to close on Mondays!. I only wish the they'd told us that when we booked 1 month before. The actual hotel owner was there, but she didn't appear to be overly welcoming. The rooms required updating, the shower was poor, and the menu was limited. The food was expensive (once you'd ordered a basic steak, you needed to add on the sauces etc and it then became really expensive). The food however was very good and could not be faulted - only the price. The selection of real ale was poor. The local shop never opened all the time we were there, and the bus only runs on Wednesdays. Sounds quaint, and we appreciate 'quaint' but we got the impression we were an inconvenience rather than guests. The lady (not the owner) who served us our evening meal, our breakfast, and who prepared our packed lunch was lovely, but overworked and probably underpaid. Take a pack of cards and plenty of money.
