“Good for bikers and / or a night out in Whitley Bay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

Stayed at the Avalon when visiting Whitley Bay for a birthday party.
The theme of the hotel is all thing motorbikes - in fact there is biker memorabilia everywhere including several motorbikes on the walls!
Positive comments - the hotel was very convenient for the 'do', the room was clean, we had a nice large bathroom, the people were friendly and the cooked breakfast was good.
On the negative side - there were several large Alsatians in the dinning room when we arrived - these dogs seemed to be far from friendly - not the sort of welcome I was expecting, in fact I was concerned what might happen if I'd wandered into the room by accident.
The location is great for a night out on the South Parade - but if you aren't partying you risk not getting much sleep.
The walls between our room and two neighbouring rooms were paper thin, and we were treated to the sound of one young bloke (who had obviously made the most of his night out with the lads) being ill for an hour or so from around 3am.
In summary - this Hotel is in a good location for night out in Whitely Bay, (and we did have a great night out) and the owners have created an interesting theme with all the biker stuff.
However if you are not into bikes or not primarily looking for a good night out with your mates we would suggest you consider a quieter part of town.

Room Tip: I guess rooms at the back are likely to be quieter

“Michael's Birthdayparty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2011

When I was in Whitley Bay in December, the owner of the Avalon Hotel invited me to come and celebrate his 50th birthday in July 2011. Which I did. It was a celebration from Friday until early Sunday morning. I met very nice members of his family, members of the hole in the wall clan bikers, and other bikers. One had come all the way from Germany.
I wanted to buy a mobile phone but did not have a Paypal account. That was no problem. Michael bought it and it arrived the next day. So I paid him for the phone.
After six day at the hotel I was asked if I would pay an amount per night which was so little that I had a feeling that I was exploiting him, but no, it was OK!
Breakfast was as it always was, perfect. I think I am known to the kitchen staff as Mr. extra Bacon. :-))
Michael and Kathleen and Ron and Robert: Thank you all for a very nice stay at your hotel. And as the Amercan general McArthur said: "I will return"

“A Nice Surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2011

We stayed at The Avalon over a bank holiday weekend, not something I would recommend unless you 30 or younger. Having said that the hotel was good value. It is located fairly close to the Metro, there are lots of restaurants in the area and parking is available. The full breakfast was quite good. Room came equipped with a kettle, tea and coffee, Iron and Ironing board. They were able to provided me with a hair dryer when I asked. The only down side is that is party central on the weekends and that there are plenty of stairs which may not be great for older people.
