“Michael's Birthdayparty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2011

When I was in Whitley Bay in December, the owner of the Avalon Hotel invited me to come and celebrate his 50th birthday in July 2011. Which I did. It was a celebration from Friday until early Sunday morning. I met very nice members of his family, members of the hole in the wall clan bikers, and other bikers. One had come all the way from Germany.
I wanted to buy a mobile phone but did not have a Paypal account. That was no problem. Michael bought it and it arrived the next day. So I paid him for the phone.
After six day at the hotel I was asked if I would pay an amount per night which was so little that I had a feeling that I was exploiting him, but no, it was OK!
Breakfast was as it always was, perfect. I think I am known to the kitchen staff as Mr. extra Bacon. :-))
Michael and Kathleen and Ron and Robert: Thank you all for a very nice stay at your hotel. And as the Amercan general McArthur said: "I will return"

“A Nice Surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2011

We stayed at The Avalon over a bank holiday weekend, not something I would recommend unless you 30 or younger. Having said that the hotel was good value. It is located fairly close to the Metro, there are lots of restaurants in the area and parking is available. The full breakfast was quite good. Room came equipped with a kettle, tea and coffee, Iron and Ironing board. They were able to provided me with a hair dryer when I asked. The only down side is that is party central on the weekends and that there are plenty of stairs which may not be great for older people.

“WHITLEY BAY'S BEST KEPT SECRET”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 March 2011

My wife and I stayed for one night at the Avalon Hotel with our 2 Siberian Huskies.
Really friendly staff, welcomed us on arrival and showed us straight to our room. Room was clean and tidy with a bath/shower, which was great.
THIS IS ONE OF THE ONLY TRUE "DOG FRIENDLY" HOTELS WE HAVE FOUND AS OTHERS THAT ADVERTISE THEMSELVES AS DOG FRIENDLY ARE CLEARLY NOT. (i.e, ONE SMALL DOG ALLOWED IN THE ROOM, BUT NOT ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE HOTEL)
Dogs were made very welcome in the room, bar and even the restaurant for breakfast, and had more than their fair share of attention from staff and customers alike.
The pub was full of locals on the evening and we were made most welcome. This is a bikers pub and there is bike memorabeila all over the pub and hotel, with vintage bike parts, two fullsize vintage bikes, and t-shirts on the ceiling from all over the world. As a themed pub, this works better than most and this is helped by the staff and locals being very friendly (even though neither of us were bikers)
Our room was large, with plenty of room for me, my wife and our 2 decent sized dogs. They don't serve food in the evenings, but there are loads of local take out places within 2 minutes walk, and the staff were more than happy to provide us with crocks, cutlery and salt n pepper so we could take it up to our room.
Beakfast was also great, with a good helping of cereals, toast and a full cooked breakfast. Loads of choice with different juices, coffee machine for self service or tea made for you if required.
We will be returning in the summer months, but for longer this time. We would like to say a big thank you to the staff and customers, who made our stay more than enjoyable.
