To attend a funeral, I had booked in advance on the internet a single room 10th and 11th March.
I was not shown to my room and Room 4 turned out to be a miserable and cheerless room.
It was extremely cold and the undersized radiator was not on. I turned it on. It made little difference. I kept my overcoat on.
On both nights the room was so cold that I had to go to bed early.
The hot tap and shower produced barely warm water.
The disposable plastic beaker at the sink contained a dead insect (silverfish?).
The tea tray had only one sachet each of tea and coffee – how miserly is that!
Breakfast is served 07:45 – 09:00 (cooked breakfasts last order 08:45) – for whose convenience is such a narrow time band?
I wish I had rejected the accommodation but circumstances did not permit me the time to find an alternative.
I have conveyed these matters to the proprietors.
I cannot see why it has been awarded three stars/crowns – even one would be too much.

“Not a bad little place”

Nice family that own it. All really welcoming and helpful when I got lost.

Decor is fairly old style, but seems to be clean and well looked after.

The room (Single room) was more than big enough for one person. With shower and sink in the room, toilet was along the corridor, bit odd but not an issue really.

Breakfast was good, served from 8am. All the usual stuff for breakfast and the guy was nearby if you needed anything extra.

I was on a bike, and the guy was happy for me to park on the pavement and chain by baby to their massive railings, so that was ok too.

Easy to find, one turn off the main promenade and you're there.

So all in all, fairly basic, nothing amazing, but good if you just want somewhere to sleep and eat I think.

“Friendly welcome”

This family-run B&B provided me with a friendly welcome, a clean and good value room, and a nice breakfast (full english was extra but a comprehensive 'continental' breakfast is included).

The hotel is fully non-smoking which is a big plus for me, they have very sensitive smoke detectors so don't even think about it (someone set off the fire alarm one morning just by using an aerosol deodorant too close to the smoke detector!).

There is free wireless internet throughout the hotel which is useful.

The only bad thing I can think of is that the only parking is on the street, and can be hard to find at times. The hotel can provide parking permits so you can park on the street without fear of being ticketed by Douglas' two traffic wardens... :-)

I would stay again...

“not bad but overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2006

We stayed here manx grand prix week. The problem with the isle of man generally is that many of the small hotels and B and B's have closed over recent years. I expect that it may be fairly quiet outside race weeks (TTand MGP) in June and September. During race periods it can be difficult to find accommodation so you have to take what is available at very inflated prices. I agree with the other comments made about this place. The owners were pleasant and helpful, the whole hotel is very dated in appearance and there are indeed strong cooking smells in the morning. The room was pretty horrible in terms of decor but was very clean. The hotel is well located. Strangely, the owner also appears to so a side line in haemoroid treatment (look for the advert for a potion called pilogene in the booklet in the room!).

“terrible decor, nice owners, OK location, not expensive”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2005

I stayed here for a few nights and have to say I was not too impressed. OK it was cheap and very clean but the decor is very dated and the house smelled of cooking the whole time, especially the kippers in the morning. The single rooms have no toilets attached to them and there are no phones in the rooms which is actually my biggest grumble. It can't be hard to stick some phones through the house. The location is quite close to the sea front which was nice. the owners were very friendly and accommodating but really should consider giving it an overhaul. at least in the downstairs as that is the first impression you get. if you are looking for somewhere v basic and clean then this should do the job but if you expect a phone and facilities i would recommend spending a bit more.
