“Wouldnt go back!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

The website looked promising and we were looking forward to the stay. The welcome was freindly but the overpowering smell of the lillies on the reception desk was off putting.

The room was clean and comfortable but dated. The TV was very small too. We had Room 29 which was very old fashioned and the wardrobe smelt awful. A nice view and a kettle that put itself on....! During our visit, there was an elephant staying in the room above us or at least thats what it felt like. We would hear it walk around and would know when it was in the bathroom.

The worst part of the whole stay was the food! We had a deal with breakfast on both days and dinner one night. The Chef has no idea about food. The breakfast was slightly better than the dinner. For dinner we ordered a steak dish where the steak was rolled. The menu choice was limited. We were not asked how we would like it cooked. It came and when we cut it open it was raw inside and the cut of meat was veiny and fatty. It was served only with vegetables and no potatoes or chips. My partner had one bite and couldnt eat any more so we put our cutlery down. A waitress came over and asked if we had finished and took the plates away. It was obvious that we hadnt eaten the meals, yet we were not asked if there was anything wrong. The second morning, we had a chunk of plastic under the sausage. Someone else has also mentioned this in a review which is worrying.

The seating arrangements are really odd in that you sit at the same table every time. There are some nice views but unless you are in one of the rooms that have the number of the sea view tables....you are not allowed to sit there.....yes; even if you ask! Odd.

All in all, the hotel is going to be busy because its website looks ok and this makes people book. The place smells of lillies and rooms are musky. We would not go back, unless we fancied a veiny bit of steak or felt like eating a chunk of plastic some day.

We did tell the receptionist about our issues but she offered no solution, no apology and infact.....no comment. The place is stuck in a time warp, they do not move with the times and I think that they beleive they run to a good standard and wont be told otherwise.

The pubs close by are lovely and the food is great! They were actually reccomended by a member of hotel staff.

Good luck :)

“Pleasant & Relaxed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We found the hotel & staff to be very friendly & relaxed.

The executive suite that we had was very well presented & extremely clean, it also had a great view.

The food was good but however would benefit from being cooked in a healthier fashion and with more variety.

On a whole we had a very pleasant stay and will go back when the warmer weather comes.

“Good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

We stayed at this Hotel for two nights as part of a specal offer includingte ferry, the room was a little disappointing as there were no large windows and we were right by the front door, this room however would be suitable for disabled guests.I t was clean and comfortable and the towels were changed each day, probably not suitable for those wanting to spend a lot of time in their room but, for us out walking most of the day it was just right.
The food is very good and the staff very helpful, couldn't do enough to help, the reception staff were also very helpful and polite,
Would probably try the adjoining hotel next time, Luccombe manor as the decor is much better!

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Having visited and stayed on the island many times we were looking forward tothis break.

Reading the website, we had high hopes for this hotel. Our impression from the outside on arrival was as expected as was our entrance and friendly welcome. However as we progressed up through the hotel it was another story. Decor poor and furnishings appear tired and worn. There seems to be too many 'bodge jobs' with no forethought about the overall impression. All doors and corridors reminiscent of being in an old school together with the smell.

Our room was on the second floor accessed by the narrowest and steepest staircase I have ever come across in a hotel let alone a house - definitely would be a problem for many people. The room (15) was a small attic room which looked nothing like anything on the website, quite basic with an 80's feel about it. The view was out onto a scruffy yard.

During our first night it rained and we were kept awake with the rhythmic drip, from the poorly maintained guttering, onto a corrugated roof below - a little like chinese water torture. It did not stop until about 5am!

The ensuite was roomy and fully tiled but sadly let down by dated furnishings. All the sealant around the sink and bath was so poorly applied it looked as though it had been done by a 5yr old. Mould galore was abundant in all the sealant. Plus the bath panel was broken and falling away from the bath. Someone had tried to remedy this, again with the 'magic' sealant - what a disaster! Laying in the bath revealed a rather unpleasant grimy brown sludge all around the underside of the sink which obviously had not been wiped for a long while.

We had dinner in the restaurant on our first night which we enjoyed, however it was spoilt by the ambience. The dining room is large so I couldn't understand why they crammed everyone into one corner around the service door. We were unfortunate enough to be placed right next to the service door where there was a constant stream coming and going and banging of doors. We never experienced the 'dining with a view' experience as only the few people allocated a table here get to see it. For some strange reason you have to sit at the same table every time, for every meal - a bit like Butlins I imagine - so no new experiences there. Breakfast was OK, nothing special. Nobody came to take our order so I never tasted anything other than cereal and toast.

We did not use the games room, pool, exercise room, squash, sauna or treatment room, only went and had a look. The smallish indoor pool area looked a little dated and more could be made of the games room. Exercise room was poor and squash court had seen better days. Before arriving I had intended having a spa treatment but in view of all of the above was put off. I did not see the interior of the treatment room which mary be very nice but the door to it, off the games room!! looked like a grubby cupboard.

Obviously I would not stay here again or be able to recommend it to anyone else.
