PLEASE don't waste your money staying at this hotel.
I understood from the signage at the hotel that it was 3star. I do think it is time to reassess the star rating.
We stayed one night, on the 15th September. These are the points that we were really disappointed in:
Windows- These looked broken. Asked in the bar, as no one was in reception, to close the windows. He couldn't do that. The wind was blowing in with 2 windows unable to be closed as the catches were broken
Lights- 2 bulbs not working in main light and only one light out of six in the bathroom. Later, when necessary, both were turned on and they fused. The following morning I was accused of fusing the lights by swtching on both. I am rather worried about the safety of the electrics in the hotel! Lights on the stairs were not left on in the evenings-further safety issues.
Staff- There was not a person of responsibility in the hotel at all times. The barman did the best he could looking after customers both in the bar as well as waiting on and looking after residents. He was repremanded, I do hope he did not loose his job because it was not his fault. The waiting on staff could do with more training. The owner was "so busy" in the morning that she had time to play on computer games, whilst waiting for residents to check out.
Heating- There was no heating at all during our stay.
Food- The dining room was deserted so went to the bar. The menu was very limited and little FRESH food. My hospitality class in school could produce better meals.
Checking out- Not a pleasant experience. I was not prepared to pay full price but I did offer to pay for the food eaten and drink consumed in the bar(which was awful) I was told I had dirtied 2 rooms linen and towels so needed to be paid for. The cat that walked all over the reception desk the previous day, was there again!(Not a cat lover) To be honest I was tired of all the lies and accusations and raised voices. I am rather old fashioned in assuming that the customer is always right and satisfied customers mean good business. I paid what was asked and got out.
This rather tired and dated hotel was not what was promised on the web site and the owner needs a wake up call, a visit from the hotel inspector.
Room Tip: The basement was not reccomended by staff, first floor the ensuite was covered in mould and the room...

1. I have been in the hotel business for more than 35 years and have a BA(Hons) Degree from the University of Ulster with a Diploma in Industrial Studies. 2. There is no 3* Signage in or outside Rossborough Hotel, I am sure that visit Scotland, the AA etc are quite capable of awarding the correct gradings. 3. We do not have broken or uncloseable windows in any room at the hotel. They are the original 1902 sash and casement windows weighted and don't normally need catches. 4. There is a night bell clearly marked on a brass plate at reception to alert a member of staff. 5. We dont have any bathrooms with 6 lights, the max is 3 in a Hospitable Cliamate Hotel. 6. As was explained to this woman in the morning, lights fluse when they are turned on and this is what happened in her room, the trip switch; a safety device activated and that is why all her lights went out. As to further safety, every electrical appliance has an annual "PAT" test and certificate. 7. We would never accuse anyone of causing damage to lights or anything else without evidence. If we thought anyone caused damage to our property deliberately we would deal with them in a very different way. 8. There are lights on the stairs which stay on permantly , also there is emergancy lighting on the stairs. 9. The Bar Manager is one of the 4 partners who own the hotel, and is always on the premises as he lives here; but not on duty 24/7. 10. The heating in the hotel in September is on 24/7. September was 1.3%C above average(metoffice) and there were no freezing conditions. 11. Our menu consists of starters, main courses, desserts, snack meals and children's meals totaling 50 items. The only item which is not fresh is Scampi. All our meals are served with hand cut chips, salad and hand made sauces created by Head Chef Richard Baird who has 27 years experience. To compare this experienced professional with school children shows considerable exageration. 12.The basement is our laundry and storage area and out of bounds to guests. One would have to ask why the woman was there? The Rossborough Hotel is family run, we apoligise if sometimes we don't come up to our own high standards.
