“Big Ears and Warm Hearts”

My wife, five year old son and I stayed at Thorntonloch for two nights whilst attending a friend's wedding in Dunbar.

From the moment of arrival we were made to feel "at home" and relaxed immediately into what felt more like a family home than a hotel. That's not say that all our needs and wants weren't catered for in a prompt and courteous manner, more that we received all of that and more.

Peter and Linda clearly have a passion for ensuring that guests feel able to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Our room was perfect for our needs and Linda's extra gestures of providing DVDs for our son should the need arise was greatly appreciated.

During our stay our son was poorly and miserable, rejecting our offers of food and nurture and eventually returning to bed to sleep off his ailments. A miracle cure was found in Peter's secret stash of Caramel Wafers which, combined with Calpol proved to be the necessary remedy!

Suffice to say that we enjoyed every minute of our stay. Highlights included the entertainment offered by "Big Ears" , Peter and Linda's dog, who remains a topic of conversation for my son still.

Last but not least, the food. Linda's breakfasts and Peter's treats were the perfect fare. Make sure you try Linda's Tattie Scones!

We've already begun talking about a Scottish Adventure for next year and Thorntonloch is high on the list for our Edinburgh Base Camp.

Room Tip: Book well in advance! Clearly very popular.

“AMAZING HOSPITALITY”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

my husband and I went to dunbar to carry out my mothers last wishes that her ashes be spread off the coast of dunbar in the north sea.So this was a very emotional time for me but Peter and Linda made the whole thing so much easier . We arrived around noon after a red eye flight and a 3hour drive from Glasgow airport( should have taken an hour and a half but first time driving in U.K.) Linda made us tea and sandwiches and delayed her vacuuming so we could get some sleep also asked Peter not to use the lawnmower. The next morning after a wonderful breakfast she gave me an orchid to say good by to my mum and told us the best place go as the tide was out , also told us no rush to check out. When we were leaving she was driving same people into dunbar to a wedding so they would be able to drink , For all this we paid only 90 pounds no extra charge for the sandwich and tea. The room was large and beautifully decorated with a large modern shower . This is the first time I ever stayed in a B&B ant it certainly will not be our last Thanks so much Peter and Linda

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view of the sea

“Extremely welcoming, friendly and the owners go above and beyond expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011 via mobile

I came across Thortonloch House whilst looking for a place to stay when attending a wedding at Dunglass Estate in September 2011. Communicating with the owners, via email was extremely easy and had everything booked with them within a couple of short messages.

Even though I only managed to arrive there at around 10pm, Linda was waiting for me to show me to the room and offer me a cup of tea. My room was a double with ensuite which was immaculately clean and the bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was amazing with eggs freshly laid by the chickens in the garden! There was a wide variety of options for breakfast if a full English (or Scottish!) is not your thing.

I stayed for two nights and was made very welcome throughout my stay. As there were a few of us staying there for the wedding, Linda very kindly offered to run us to and from Dunglass which was short car journey away. She also gave me a lift to Dunbar station in the morning!

The beach is just a short walk away from the house so very handy if you are looking for some sea and sand!

All in all, I would highly recommend a stay at Thortonloch House as you couldn't ask for a better welcome or service during your stay. The rooms are extremely well presented and the breakfast is fantastic!

“Lovely location, very helpful hostess”

We stayed here for 2 nights for a friend's wedding at the nearby Dunglass Estate. Linda was very accommodating allowing us to have a late breakfast on both days (full English cooked on an aga) to tide us through the festivities / allow us to have a lie in afterwards! Linda also very kindly drove us to and from the wedding and provided an iron and hair dryer for getting ready. I think she would also pick up/drop off at Dunbar train station if asked (4 miles away).

Our room didn't have a sea view but was very comfy and spacious. My only criticism would be that the tea/coffee facilities were limited and not replaced for our 2nd night.

We loved being close to the sea and went running and swimming both mornings. The area has its own 'microclimate' due to its shelteredness and was considerably warmer than Edinburgh the day we were there, sunning ourselves on the beach watching fisherman haul in sea bass attracted by the warm water flowing from the nearby power station (don't worry it's a Blue Flag beach!). The John Muir way also goes right past the house and Thorntonloch would be a good stopover for walkers.

“Perfection!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

Myself and two friends stayed here in August 2011 while doing a charity bike ride from Leeds to Edinburgh. The B & B is beautiful & clean, a welcoming place that instantly feels like home, which is just as much down to the owners Peter & Linda. The went above and beyond any expectations anyone could ever have of any host. 10/10!!
