Because of Helth reasons I have not been away for about three years, and normally I don,t stay at Guest Houses because i have found that dogs are at best tolerated. But from the moment We arrived at Amber House Rooney was catered for as well as I was. The room was outstanding with TV DVD, Kettle and was spotless their were full A4 information packs both for Humans and dogs. We stayed for three nights.Amber House was a great spot for us AND IS run perfectly in my opinion.Christine and Lloyd offer great value for money and I thank tem for letting us stay.

Room Tip: There are double rooms for dogs

Thank you for taking the time to post a review for us. We are so pleased you and Rooney, your dog, had a great time here. I know you were happy with our little budget single Cove - and yes it does have the headroom restriction of six foot 3 inches in the shower enclosure. For single travellers who want more space we do have double rooms that we let with single occupancy. Do ring us for prices. Many thanks.

“An ideal place to stay”

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Amber House. Our room was spacious and spotlessly clean. The owners and staff couldn't have been more helpful and the breakfast was superb. All this together with all the added extras went to make this hotel special. It is in a quiet location but within easy reach of Goodrington and the centre of Paignton, making it a perfect holiday location. We are looking forward already to a return visit next year.

Thank you so much for your review. We too love the location here between Goodrington and Paignton and like one guest pointed out last week - if you need to be straight out onto the road to Totnes or Dartmouth it is very easy to access these routes from here. So all in all we are inclined to agree with you that Amber House is an ideal place to stay!

“Very comfortable & friendly”

We really enjoyed our stay at Amber House. It's one of the best guest houses we have stayed in and certainly the friendliest. It was very clean with very well equipped rooms and the breakfast was excellent. The owners and staff were all very helpful and they had good knowledge of the surrounding area helping us to make choices on where to visit. Would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: We stayed in Tall Ships which had a great sea view.

Thank you for yourexcellent review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and found the breakfasts in particular excellent. Sometimes when guests are here for a short while and there is so much to do and see and so many eating establishments to choose from, guests can get a little overwhelmed with everything on offer! Even we do sometimes when there are so many events and festivals going on in The English Riviera - as well as all the usual attractions. So a little bit of insider knowledge can help point guests in the right direction for their interests and requirements. They can then just get on and enjoy their break and not have to spend hours ploughing through vast acres of tourist information. We're here to help!

“If you have problems beware!”

I am sure if you have a pleasant stay then you are fine, if you have issues the owners turn into completely different people. They do not understand that customer service includes accepting and politely dealing with customer complaints. They become very uncommunicative, unhelpful and nasty! I would not recommend this place to anyone.

We have very few complaints and if we do receive one we always deal with them politely and efficiently as we want our guests to have an enjoyable time staying with us and we run our business with very high standards across all areas of service and cleanliness. Most people are appreciative of what we offer and guests are happy to draw our attention to things such as a light bulb that has blown. We will remedy such things immediately. However, in this case, no complaint about the service, cleanliness or food was made by the guest who stayed.

The guest was an elderly lady whose daughter had booked her into a single room for a 4 night stay. The daughter had originally wanted somewhere serving evening meals. I said we did not serve evening meals for the dates she wanted. Weeks later she rang back and booked anyway and told us her mother could walk to eating establishments. I said there were several nearby and that if her mother wanted a taxi or recommendations we were happy to provide these. However, when the daughter arrived with the mother they refused all the welcoming information and recommendations we could offer and she took her mother to her room immediately as she said they had had a harrowing journey. We offered to provide information later. They were invited to ring when they were ready.

They did not do so and instead the daughter walked the mother down to the Harbour which is quite a steep walk. The daughter left in the afternoon and the mother later demanded directions to the local Brewer’s Fayre - which we gave. At no point did she ask where she could go that was easily accessible nor did she request a taxi. During the time the mother stayed we gave help with her TV, opening the front door and provided extra fruit tea bags on her hospitality tray as it was noted at breakfast that she preferred these to ordinary tea. Unfortunately, the next morning it was pouring with rain and the atrocious weather looked to be set in for the day. She was offered all the usual courtesy at breakfast but seemed in a bad humour. She was offered help with planning a steam train trip, organising a coach trip and given other recommendations for eating out. None of these she took up but complained that she had walked to the Harbour the previous day with her daughter and that it had been too much for her. This is the only complaint that was made and that was nothing at all to do with us.

She must have then rung one of her daughters to be picked up as a few hours later another daughter arrived and said it wasn’t working out for her mother. No information was given as to what reason the mother had given for wanting to be taken back home. We agreed to a refund for the remaining nights as we assumed the mother just did not want to be here by herself in the rain and had over-taxed herself with the walking. The booking had been made on the first daughter’s card so we said we would refund to that card. Whilst we were waiting for the first daughter to ring to make the refund on the card, I went to the mother’s room thinking that she had left the door key in the room and gone. But the daughter and mother were still there. I was slightly surprised but said I was sorry it wasn’t working out for her and yes the weather was atrocious. The mother said that she was leaving because her knees hurt from walking down to the Brewer’s Fayre the evening before - which differed slightly from the version she had given at breakfast. She seemed to blame us for the problem with her knees. The daughter said that we should make it clear that all the distances given on our website should be changed to times it would take for people to go to these places if they have bad knees. She also said her mother didn’t like people to know about her bad knees which was why she hadn’t mentioned it (!)

Meanwhile the first daughter had rung with the card details for a refund and as my husband was processing it she started to rant about how we had not looked after her mother.( This was an entirely different take on why the mother wanted to leave – not consistent with the bad knees reason). It was quite unnecessary, unjustified and we were at a total loss to understand why she took to hurling insults that had no basis in reality. My husband said he would put the phone down if she continued in that manner - which she did. So he had no choice but to put the phone down. Hence the uncommunicative insult levelled at us by this reviewer. Please note that despite us not having to refund in these circumstances we gave them a refund anyway – this gesture of goodwill was obviously not appreciated.

Of course we look after our guests, of course we deal with the few genuine complaints we get – we have a very successful business built on quality. We have had many elderly people with walking difficulties stay in our ground floor rooms. The majority stay with other family members or friends. If they do not have friends or family to take them out for the day some hire mobility scooters (we can arrange this if needed) or take taxis if they cannot manage to walk well.

“What a friendly place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2011

Stayed here with our son and dalmation (in the Rock Pool and Cove rooms) and had a fantastic time.
The rooms were exceptionaly clean and breakfast was delicious, they even managed to convert our son to porridge! (although the full English was still our favourite)
There was a TV and dvd player in each room with a wide selection of dvds in the reception area in case of bad weather.
Everything on hand to care for our dog including cloths to wipe her down after a run on the dog friendly beach 5 mins away through a very dog friendly park.
Christine and Lloyd were very helpful and gave lots of good advise on places to visit in the area. (even though our dog broke into their office and ate all the cat food!)

Room Tip: The Rock Pool had a large double and a single to the side so ideal for couples with a young child
