On arrival we were given the warmest of welcomes by the manager, who was keen to ensure that everything was to our liking. I had requested a room with a sea view and bath, as this was a special holiday for us. We were given the key to room 54, which is extremely comfortable and well appointed, has views over the bay and also has a tiny balcony accessed via patio doors.
The Palace is a fusion of historical and contemporary styles and is warm and inviting, with a particular charm that makes it a very comfortable place to be. The lounges are lovely, with a couple of open fires which are most welcome at this time of year. The staff were efficient and helpful and seemed to operate as a cohesive team. They seem to intuitively understand that this is your holiday - a precious few days away, and do their best to make sure it is as enjoyable as possible.
The restaurant is pleasant, service efficient and the food is of a very good standard and well presented. There are nice touches - for example hot milk served with coffee, which is something of a rarity these days and the plates were always piping hot.
Access to the leisure centre is outside. Pool towels are provided and you need a £1 coin for the lockers (refundable.)The swimming pool was lovely and warm during our stay.
To sum up, we enjoyed four blissful days at the Palace. A perfect start to a brand new year. I cannot imagine that we would want to stay anywhere else when we are in Devon. The Palace is just delightful, comfortable and great value for money.
