“Clean, cheap & cheerful”

Well we certainly didn't book to stay at a Wetherspoon's Lodge!

We were sent here by the Crown at Worthington who had totally lost our booking from 5 months previous :-(
We were HORRIFIED when we arrived here having booked a country inn close to the venue of the wedding we were attending.....
BUT - the girl on reception was most helpful and knew we were running very late for a wedding.
The room was extremely small, we kept bumping into each other as there was no room to walk.....but there were loads of plugs, extra pillows, clean towels, tea & coffee making equipment and a small flatscreen TV.

The beds were very comfortable - the bedding was clean but somehow felt very slightly damp to me - unless there was a plastic sheet underneath it but I didn't have time or inclination to have a look incase I saw something I didn't like! We were late for the wedding.....

The bathroom was extremely basic but was clean and functioning and there was a very hot towel rail - situated right next to the toilet so mind your legs!! :-)

There were only 2 coffee sachets and 2 teabags - a bit stingy in a twin room.
The corridor outside smelt a bit fusty - and the room did too really....

We returned late evening from the wedding and the pub downstairs was heaving with people and we imagined it was going to be a hellish experience - however, we found a free parking space in the car park and when we retired for the night we never heard a sound!!

So in fairness, although it is not the sort of place we would choose to stay and not where we wanted to be - it was a pretty decent experience. Nothing to worry about although
Reception was always deserted so I did feel anyone could have walked on up the stairs.

I wouldn't choose to stay there and I wouldn't stay there again if we were in Wigan. It's nowhere near as good as a Travelodge - but it was ok. Nothing more, nothing less.

“Mixed bag...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2007

Well first thing is that its on Mesnes road and their are 2 Mesnes roads very close to each other so if you are using GPS go by post code which lists as an unknown road. The staff are not all helpful if you are having problems trying to locate them reflected in the fact that my girlfriend hung up on them when trying to get better directions as the woman was not helpful. The room itself was ok it was clean and well stocked with a good shower but the water was yellow! The car park is not at all safe with my car being scratched on the first night their which made us relocate for the second night so only 1 out of the 2 nights booked were used. I would say spend the extra £10 a night and stay at a proper hotel instead. Oh and the bar staff are as bad as other reviews have said but only the result of minimum wage pay!

  • Liked — the price
  • Disliked — pretty much everything else.. I like my car to be safe when I pay for a room and accomodation.

“Cheap and cheerful!”

Nice little hotel 5 minutes walk from the shops. Rooms were small but nice (there being more than one spare plug was an added bonus!) and the Wetherspoons bar downstairs made for cheap and reasonable food and drink that often isnt found in bars attached to hotels. Definitely recommended!

“Great night life”

if you want a cheap short break to Wigan The Brocket Arms is a great place to stay. It will cost about £2.00 taxi fare to town centre which is packed with cheap pubs and clubs to suit all tastes. Wigan also has a great shopping centre and surrounded by lovely countryside. The rooms in the hotel are basic but very clean and has very helpful staff, as it its also a Wetherspoon pub the food is good and cheap and you can always stumble upstairs to bed afterwards and then get up for a hearty breakfast the morning
Really would recommend that you stay here once and you will keep going back, great value for money.
