“Great Location and staff but in need of attention”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

The staff were very nice and the location could not be better. The hotel is old and charming but ruined by the mouldy bathroom and hot temperature in the room. We were unable to turn the heating down and had the window open which was noisy of course . There was also a constant noise of heating pipes running down the back of the room all night.
It would not costthem much to use a spray bleach to get rid of the mould and mildew and some emulsion to freshen up the ceiling. I recommend they do this as soon as possible it was very unpleasant. The bathroom door had been damaged and still had a hole and the sink was also cracked. The kettle interior was in need of descaling. This hotel needs to smarten up a bit.

Room Tip: Ours was at the front so would recommend to avoid there

“Good central hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

I booked this hotel through an offer web site and I can tell you I was not disappointed, from the moment we went in the staff could not have been more helpful, from the two girls at the reception to the barman they could not have been nicer. the hotel is very central which was excellent for me.
The room I got over looked the car park(more of this later)and was roomy, clean and bright,it had the usual teas and coffee and a good shower.
There was plenty of room in the car parek for which you needed a permit,I read on here that there was not much room in it,but I can assure you there is.
Both car parks had room to spare.
The breakfast room was well lit and clean, the breakfast was the usual choices, and there was enough of it without being too filling.

All in all a great nights stay for the money, and I will be back.

Room Tip: Any room would be good enough if they are all like the one I had.

“Good value comfortable hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011
1
person found this review helpful

Located (with carpark) in the town centre it is ideal for an inexpensive one or two nights stay. My room was clean, comfortable, tidy and warm and there was plenty of hot water. Bar was not up to much, having no draft or bottled real ale or customers come to that, but full english breakfast was good. Staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Difficult to find by car in the dark as main sign was not illuminated and main entrance was not obvious - in fact once in the town centre I had to ask the way 4 times and was actually literally on the other side of the road from the hotel and did not notice it.

Room Tip: Ask for one in the rear of the hotel for quietness

“A bit run down but I liked it!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

Stayed here for a stop-over whilst travelling further North on Christmas Eve.
As some other reviews say,it does require a bit of 'spruceing-up',but I would hate to see it go all faux suede and 70's' retro' which seems to have come in to vogue.(You know, chandeliers and 'mock flock' wallpaper in purple or lime green!).It made me feel quite nostalgic and reminded me of a traditional hotel from the real 70's.
Staff were pleasant enough, the breakfast was OK and the beds were comfortable, with crisp , clean sheets, and at the price I have no complaints apart from the naff Christmas music in the restaurant at breakfast.
I would stay there again, should the necessity arise.
Do it up but keep the character!
