“Beautiful building... shame about the room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Although my review is poor based on the room it would be unfair to not mention the excellent service I had from the staff at Abbey house. They were polite and attentive and room service was very prompt and was of a decent standard. They also have free wifi which had a decent strength.

This hotel was built by Edward Lutyens and is a grade 2 listed building, which may be a reason for the condensation problems in my room - although I'm not an expert I would have thought a dehumidifier might help? If listed building consent is a problem. I stopped in room 35, which had single glazed iron windows, but as there's a bathroom attached it had a major problem with condensation. The wall paper had bubbled away from the wall in places and the mullions were covered in mould. There was also a consumer unit on display too...The room could have been lovely, huge, great views but it was tatty, the furniture/furnishings were tired and tatty. The heating went off at around 8pm (there was a heater but it was pretty poor).

I was in a standard room at £85.

Thank you very much for your recent kind comments regarding the Abbey House team, much appreciated!

I am sorry you felt our rooms were 'under par'.

We are progressing through a room by room renovation programme which will see the needed changes made to bedroom standards, including secondary glazing where necessary.

As I’m sure you appreciate this needs to be done with the utmost care and understanding whilst selecting appropriate furnishings and decor.

We hope you will visit us again and be able to see your comments put into action!

Please quote 'Abbey 15' on your next visit.

Kind Regards

“December break”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

We spent 2 nights at the Abbey House in December. The beautiful building looks impressive - but to get in it is necessary to walk through the groups of people outside smoking. There are large 'ash trays' at either side of the front door that were not emptied in the 3 days we stayed there.
The bedroom was spacious but the bed uncomfortable, the pillows flat and thin and the draft through the windows was as if we had the window open.
We got a special deal on the run up to Christmas, would not have paid the standard rate.
Some of the staff were friendly and the food was good. Not somewhere we will rush back to.

Thank you for your recent comments regarding your stay at Abbey House, I was disappointed you only thought your stay an average one.....

.... The outdoor ashtrays are indeed something we are aware of. While we do have designated smoking areas, the front entrance is still a congregation point for smokers and the pillars for cigarette ends are necessary to help avoid an untidy entrance, we do endeavour to clean them often throughout busy periods.

Our rooms and furnishings are undergoing a room by room refurbishment and we hope you will return to see our progress in the future.

Please quote 'Abbey 15' on your next visit

“A bit Shabby House”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

I spent one night here as part of a family wedding party.

The waiting, bar and reception staff were all excellent. The wedding arrangements themselves were well done and the food at the wedding reception was excellently presented and cooked. The public rooms are superb and the grounds stunning.

So why an average rating?

What prevents this hotel from maximising its potential is the rather shabby state of the corridors and the bedrooms. Obviously, hotel corridors get a lot of traffic, but that does not excuse peeling paper, scuff marks (easily removable) and chipped paintwork. The door to my room looked like it had been forced; and a patch job was done on the paintwork around the door knob.

My room, although comfortable, was dusty- on the top of the skirting, the mirror, the fireplace and lamp bulbs (thanks hotel inspector for that one!). The bathroom was reasonably clean, though the bath sealant needs replacing as it was mouldy. There was a broken socket (potentially dangerous) beside my bed and although the original windows are attractive, they are rusty and a bit cumbersome to open.

In short, a potentially lovely place, but maintenence and housekeeping need to up their game.

Room Tip: Better rooms seem to be in the new wing, the bride was gutted by the state of her parents' first...

Thank you for your recent kind comments regarding the Abbey House team and we are very pleased you enjoyed the wedding celebrations.

We are very aware of the necessary maintenance issues and are progressing through a room by room refurbishment which will see the issues you raise dealt with. The housekeeping team work very hard to ensure all of our guests comfort but have taken your comments on board.

We do, as I'm sure you will appreciate, have some delicate issues relating to our building which require the utmost care and attention when it comes to refurbishment and where possible windows will have secondary glazing and be more accessible to our guests.

I hope you will return to see us, please quote 'Abbey 15' on your next visit!
