“Nice Hotel but not without problems”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I have stayed at this hotel many times, and have had some issues before, but it is well located. This time I visited I checked in and everyone was pleasant and helpful. To connect to the so called high speed internet, you need a cable, but they don't volunteer this information so you need to trek back to reception to get one. I could not get a connection, in my room or any other even their conference room, but the attitude was that it may be my computer as there had been a conference using it earlier that day. Well there is no fault with my computer. The Wi Fi is dreadful. I thought the effort to deal with this problem was poor, phoning some guy who deals with their IT and waiting for him to call back, which he never did.
My room was freezing and so was my cooked breakfast the following day and i was the only one in the restaurant !! At £134.00/night B&B, this sort of service is unacceptable. A few weeks ago I stayed in a hotel in Paramonga in Peru, that cost me $12.00/night room was basic as expected but the internet connection was brilliant.

Room Tip: Ask to be put in the new part.

Dear ATGriff,

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay with us. I do wish that I had had the opportunity to speak with you during your stay.

We have had a number of issues recently regarding internet access, and it is something that we are definitely working to improve. The majority of our guests stay with us as part of their leisure time, and so the main priorities for them are the restaurant, spa, and the great location next to Lake Windermere. I totally understand though, that for your stay, one of the priorities was internet access, and I'm sorry that it didn't seem like it was our priority too.

I'm equally disappointed that you were let down at breakfast, and that your room was not comfortable due to the temperature. I am sure that you will see from most of our reviews that these are not normally issues that our guests encounter, and I am unable to explain why they should have inconvenienced you so much on this occasion.

I don't feel that your stay was reflective of our hotel in general, or of the sort of service that is common in Macdonald Hotels, and I do hope that you will give us the opportunity to rectify these issues, and then come and stay with us again in the future.

Kind regards,

David McGhie

“A very enjoyable stay.”

We visited the Macdonald Old England Hotel on 21st January for four nights fully inclusive and what a lovely hotel it is. The setting is beautiful and the staff could not have been more helpful and pleasant. The concierge got involved with everything to help the guests, from parking the car to giving directions and I was most impressed. I dont know when the other people reviewing this visited, but it wasn't very busy so maybe we were lucky. The lounge is lovely and peaceful with lovely views over the lake.
The food was delicious and the service great. We got an upgrade to a partial lake view which was fine and car parking is free, unlike other Macdonald hotels we have visited.
My only little gripe was that the rooms were not cleaned until 3.00 pm and if you wanted to come back to the room it was a little inconvenient.

Dear murphy64,

I am so glad to read that you had an enjoyable stay with us here at the Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa.

From reading your comments you appear to be very pleased with all aspects of our hotel - from the food, our extensive public areas, the great views and the excellent service provided by our team members.

Our Concierge team are well known for adding the little extra touches to our guests' stays, and I'm happy that yours was no exception.

With regard to the cleaning and servicing of your room, sometimes it's difficult to judge how long our guests will be out of their rooms, especially when most people staying with us have a long lie and don't leave their room until much later than normal. When you come to stay with us in the future, please let us know and we can happily try to fit the cleaning in to meet with your arrangements.

Thank you for your comments - it's great to know what we're doing right, and even better to know what we could be improving.

Kind regards,

David McGhie

“Beautiful hotel but check room location.”

Arrived on a Friday after booking a package for 2 nights £440 dbb inc wine in a feature room. Service at reception is VERY slow, definately need extra staff at check in and out times. After staying previously at this hotel we thought paying extra for a feature room would be extra special however were very disappointed, the view was more of a roof and wall than lake view. Good view of lake if you sat in the windowsill! (room 226) pictures on website very misleading, not worth the extra money above an executive room at about £100 less.
Asked at reception whether a feature room was more expensive than an executive and was given incorrect info as they said it was less expensive, couldn't check on Internet as no wi-fi, no Internet access in our room(broken) ,bt open zone not working in other areas. For a 4* hotel you would expect wi-fi in this day and age.
However beside the few negatives there are lots of positives.
Concierge parking the cars is fabulous , even helped with his assistant to dig everyone out of deep snow and return cars from the car park, also great sense of humour.
Lounge overlooking lake wonderful place to sit and relax, service excellent.
Food in restaurant fabulous, wonderful views, good service.
Breakfast also very tasty.
Great young waiter called chris who was serving in lounge, dining room and doing room service.
All in all a beautiful hotel in fantastic setting but needs a few tweaks to make it more value for money and definately needs another computer on reception! Also ask where your room will be!

Dear Chrissys63,

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay. I''m sorry though for any little niggles that may have let down your experience with us.

The hotel is set in an ideal location with great views of the lake, as we depict in most of the material that we use to advertise our hotel. We have 106 bedrooms here, each with a variety of styles, shapes and views. I'm sure you can appreciate that we cannot guarantee every guest the view that is shown in our pictures.

We have had a number of challenges with internet accessibility in the past weeks, particularly with some maintenance issues that we have worked hard to rectify. I am entirely aware of the need to provide such a facility, but I do feel that for most guests the other features of the Hotel - our spa, restaurant and location - more than make up for this minor glitch.

I am very pleased though that you have taken time to single out some of our staff members, particularly our Concierge team, and one of our bartenders, Chris. All the team members work very hard in the hotel, so it is disappointing when we are let down by physical issues within our building.

Your feedback is very important to us, as it gives us a different way of looking at things that we deal with every day. I do hope that when you return to stay with us in the future, you will see what a difference your comments make.

Warm regards,

David McGhie

“Excellent Service, Great Stay, Very friendly!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

My wife and myself have just returned from a 2 night stay at this hotel. The hotel was excellent and had a very comfortable warm friendly feel to it.
We were given a free upgrade to a lake view room which was very nice although possibly a little on the small size though. The lake view was more like a half lake viewso I would recommend that if you ask for ione of these you make sure that you have a full view from the window otherwise probably not worth the extra money.
The spa was excellent too. We treated ourselves to a treatment each, I had a full body deep tissue massage which was very good and certainly removed quite a few stress knots!!! My wife had a facial where they only use the top quality products.
The food was probably the outstanding part of the experience for us. Although the menu was fairly limited the quality and the taste was exeptional! Probably the best steak I have ever had! The breakfast was also outstanding. Who ever they have as a chef they need to make sure they hold on to them!
The only slight negative which made this 4 star rating instead of a full five was that there was no wifi in the rooms and the tv channels were limited to freeview only. Nowadays wifi in a top hotel should be a must.
Overall we had a fantastic break and will definitely go back again.

Dear martin t,

Thank you very much for your kind comments. I'm delighted that on the whole you enjoyed your stay here at the Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa.

We have a number of rooms with excellent views, so I hope when you stay with us next we can arrange one of these rooms for you.

I'm glad that you enjoyed the Spa at the Old England, which is probably one of the best in the area. For other readers, we use products and treatments by Elemis, a British brand which gets rave reviews.

My colleagues in the Kitchen and Restaurant are very pleased that you enjoyed their food. We have just launched some new menus which are proving very popular. All our steaks are from 21 day aged beef supplied by Scotbeef. The quality and provenance of our food is very important to us as a company, so I'm glad that on this occasion the hard work in sourcing such products has paid off.

As Hotel Manager, I am currently looking at the internet access that we offer. Wi-fi is available from BT Openzone in the 'Old House' of the building. Hi Speed Broadband is available in the New Wing. Many of our guests come to unwind and give up the hectic pace of life, but some do like to keep in touch with the outside world, so we will defintely consider what access we are offering in the future.

Thank you once again for your feedback - it helps us to monitor the service that we provide and develop the experience for both future and returning guests.

Dear purple b,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on your stay. For a number of years I have worked for Macdonald Hotels, and I'm proud to say that we do have some excellent bedrooms with amazing views here at the Old England Hotel & Spa.

On this occasion though, I'm sorry that the cleanliness in the bedroom was not of the standard that one would expect. I'd really appreciate it if you could take the opportunity to contact me at the hotel, so that my Head Housekeeper and I can inspect the room in question (there are 106 rooms and I'm not sure in which one you stayed). We have a lot of guests who are delighted with our rooms, and I'm disappointed that the issues that you have described had not been addressed before your arrival.

On a positive note though, I'm glad that you enjoyed the food in our restaurant. We use only the finest fresh ingredients, and have recently launched three new dinner menus that rotate on a daily basis.

I do look forward to hearing from you, and hope that you will take the chance to return to our hotel and experience the rest of what we can do.

Kind regards,

David McGhie
