We received a warm welcome from John as soon as we arrived and were impressed with the level of service throughout our stay. Comfy room, everywhere very clean, and excellent breakfast on both mornings! Would definitely recommend and stay again. Only one very minor niggle: the shower, although in a nicely decorated shower room, was not powerful enough and there was no hot water when we came in one night...however, that was at 1am so can't complain too much!
All in all, a great place to stay and close (walking distance) to Appleby town centre.

I arrived with a walking party to walk the Westmoreland Way and found the owner more than helpful advising us on the best place to eat in Appleby how correct he was.The rooms were clean and the guests lounge was comfortable and well maintained, and the outside gardens are well worth a look if you get some sun on your trip. The breakfast was basic but well cooked.Bongate is fair value for the money.

Quite a busy place and deserves to be. Our room at the back, overlooking the garden, was fairly small but the quietest. Comfortable, too. As well as the shower in our en-suite room there was a bathroom available. Great for soaking at the end of a long walk.
Breakfast was good. Freshly cooked to order.

We stayed at Bongate House on the way up to Stranraer. We have a two year old and a 9mouth old baby. John was friendly and accomadating. They put out a single bed for my toddler and a travel cot for the baby. At breakfast they provided a booster seat. John bent over backwards to help us from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. The sitting room was lovely and the perfect place to watch CBeebies in the morning. We would highly recommend Bongate house and would like to thank our hosts for making our stay very relaxing.
