The Limes is the perfect B&B in the Appleby area (and wider without any doubt). Penny does everything to make you feel good, from a magnificent breakfast to advise on restaurants, from chess games to books, from comfy beds to great showers, really everything is done to assure a perfect stay.
We will certainly return when travelling again to North England or Scotland.

We were only staying one night, just to break the trip back home to Scotland. We had booked a room with a separate bathroom (on a different floor to the bedroom) but were happy with that idea just for one night. As things turned out the en-suite room was available so Penny, the owner, let us stay in it at no extra charge.

Settling into our room, and admiring the view over the neighbouring fields and stream (though looking more like a river after recent heavy rain) we were delighted to be treated to a fine pot of tea and homemade flapjack. The local village lacks any pub/restaurant but Appleby is only 2 miles away and seems to offer a fair selection. We asked Penny's advice as to where we could get a good pub meal and, after some discussion, settled upon one of the Appleby hotels at which Penny then very kindly booked us a table.

Very comfortable bed. The en suite shower room was nice and modern, if a little small. Breakfast was excellent - a great NON GREASY cooked breakfast with homemade bread and a good choice of ancillary items.

If you are thinking of stopping overnight on the M6 in Cumbria then it is well worth the 15 minute detour to this nice quiet village to spend a night (or two) at The Limes.

Stayed here for one night while visiting Appleby Horse Fair. Lovely oasis of calm to come back to in the evening and Penny is a wonderful host. Rooms clean and comfortable and breakfast is the best we have ever had! Would definately come back and stay at The Limes if we are down in this part of the world again.

Breakfast is not for the feint-hearted! The freshly baked bread is wonderful and don't miss the black pudding!

It's an excellent location for either a stop-off on the journey north into Scotland or as a base for exploring the Lake District, the North Yorkshire Fells or both.
