“take a hot water bottle! (and eat elsewhere....). in fact just stay somewhere else”
We had 2 nights at the Hoops Inn as part of a Groupon deal at the end of January 2012. As soon as we arrived, we realised that the place was not going to live up to its website. The huge hoardings outside and the shabby interiors are missing from all the photos on their website.
First of all we were given Room 14 and it was FREEZING. We went to Reception and asked to be moved to a room on the other side of the building (which had some sun on it), so we were moved across the corridor to Room 16. It was still very cold (we were in the middle of the coldest snap of winter so far). We went down to ask why the heating wasn't on, and (unlike the other reviewer who was told it was for 'ecological' reasons,) we were simply told "it's not come on yet". It was 1pm.
We decided to run a bath to warm up - there was some hot water and as long as you kept topping it up, you could keep warm. However, after a short while, they came and banged on the door saying there was a leak and we had to get out of the room. We went down to the bar (which, to be fair was very warm if you could get next to the log fire) and bought some overpriced drinks whilst we waited for the plumber to fix the leak.
3 hours later and we were told it was OK to go back to the room. We went in and it was still cold, so I thought I'd try out the shower. Before I had chance to switch it on, they came running back upstairs again to tell us not to use the bathroom as all the pipes were still disconnected.
The heating came on in the evening and the room warmed up a bit, but I still needed extra blankets and fleecey pyjamas to keep warm. How romantic.
The next day we were woken by the "plumber" in the room below, knocking the ceiling down to look for (another) leak. Again, no heating or hot water for us, so we decided to go down to breakfast.
Breakfast was OK - not as good as you get at a Premier Inn, but not as bad as a real cheap breakfast at IKEA or somewhere. I had some "fresh" fruit salad (made a few days earlier) and a small English breakfast. The fried eggs were overcooked, and the sausage tasted cheap and greasy. The cereals were fine.
That evening, because we couldn't get in our room nor drive elsewhere, we ate in the Bar. £11 for a plate of fish and chips. It was very nice, but overpriced for what you got.
Overall, the staff were friendly (at some points, overly friendly) and, apart from the odd argument and bout of moaning between staff in the bar, they were quite curteous.
I would NOT go back there again. Most of the faults I can overlook in a Fawlty Towers type way, but it was just way WAY too cold. When you are in a hotel room in your hat and coat and you can see your breath, you are not set up for a romantic break away!! (Book the Premier Inn instead - at least it's warm there).
