“Great place to stay if you accept it for what it is - old style family run Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

We recently stayed here for 4 nights. It is an interesting old victorian house that is comfortable, mostly clean but a bit dusty here and there. It has a very good breakfast and dinner. Normally we wouldn't eat at the same place for 4 nights but the choice and quality was good enough. Portion sizes could be smaller and then it would be easier to manage all 3 courses. It does need updating in both decor and facilities (analogue TV!). Some of the staff could do with a bit of basic training in waitressing (leaning over you to get plates, bit too quick to clear things away etc) but it has the atmosphere of an old style family run hotel. It is in the centre of the village and within walking distance of the train station and the forest and often with ponies and donkeys outside the gates. We had a very pleasant stay here.

“Excellent short break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011

We had a 3 day break during the week and found the hotel, staff and food all to a very good standard. We were a little apprehensive after reading some adverse comments in other reviews but now cannot understand why they were posted when they were clearly wrong! From the helpfull staff, lovely and varied food to the quality bed linen all was more than expected. The hotel did have some old decor but was not dirty or unkempt as others reported. The only thing we would have liked would have been an earlier start to dinner.

“We're never comin back”

The problem is with some of the staffs. They are non welcoming and defensive against requests. I seriously considered forfeiting my deposit and moving out on the first day. I asked one of them about bike trip, and she said there's nothing much you can do without a car. What a letdown. There's actually a lot to do including bike riding. They just didn't know and had no willpower to be informative. We brought a computer but the wifi did not work the whole time and they had no intention of doing anything about it. They ordered same newspapers twice and tried to charge it to us just the same. As a conclusion, way too overpriced.. I even saw a couple who stayed thinking the room rate is 67 instead of 134 per night. Yes, it's believable that way. if the rate is the half of what it is, it would be quite a deal, but you definitely won't get money's worth as it is.

“The worst hotel you can possibly imagine.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011

To use the word 'hotel' is a joke for this establishment. It is run down, dirty, damp and the prices epitomize extortion! The bathroom was unforgivably dirty and on mentioning this to the proprietor I was greeted by a defensive "it's not dirty madam, just stained" - not exactly reassuring. The bedrooms are appalling; the blankets were stained, there are holes in the floor covered up by 1970's carpets, the furniture is shabby and old and there are stains and damp all over the walls.
On giving feedback to the co-proprietor about the state of the place, I was told that they have many returning and happy customers. I can only imagine how horrific their other hotel experiences might be, to rate the Watersplash as a place worth returning to.
If this is the only place in the New Forest with vacancies, take your tent - you will have a much better stay under canvas!

“Charming garden for a cup of tea.”

SECRET GARDEN CAFE-
We have enjoyed many cups of tea and delicious cakes & scones in this charming little oasis in the heart of Brockenhurst. A great idea, locals and visitors love it.
