“not nearly as bad!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

Hard to believe some of the venomous reviews when we stayed between Xmas and New Year! Granted the breakfasts were ordinary, but the (overworked) staff were really friendly and helpful (mended my sister's door lock as soon as it stopped working) and the rooms were very good and quite well decorated. Both of us got double beds in single rooms at less than £30; a bath, unusual these days, a radio ditto- the only thing that didn't work was the heated towel rail in bathroom. No one disturbed us in the morning as reported and noise from the bar and street wasn't bad.

“Housekeeping staff member 'noisy'”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

On arrival at Dalgair hotel we did get welcomed and taken up to our room. At no point was it mentioned that the 11am checkout which is displayed online is actually starting at 10am!!!!! as the housekeeping staff bang on your door after stamping aroung heavy foot and shouting across the corridor to her colleague.Breakfast stops at 9am and againg housekeeping staff make it clear whilst eating that 9 is the deadline so you need to eat fast if you've came down at 8.50am.Being aware now of the 10.30 on the dot scary housekeeping women I ran down to the cashline (across the road) to pay the bill. Whilst I was doing this my friend 'had time' to jump in the shower and get changed.Again the housekeeping women(short hair, should have taken her name to report to manager)must have been waiting on the dot and she put the key in the room door and to my friends horror just stood their, friend 'just out the shower'had to grab something to try and cover up.What a shame this was because the live band and bar staff are lovely but this women is a dragon!!! When I spoke to her and showed my receipt of 11am checkout she said they have been trying to say to tripadvisor and laterooms but it hasn't been changed, putting that aside her stamping, shouting, banging on the door, and barging in was totally inappropriate behaviour and very disapointing.

Room Tip: Remember breakfast is at a earlier cut off at 9am . Be prepared for a noisy hosekeeping staff who wi...

“Not The Best”

Booked this hotel through late rooms.com. This was for a weekend away with my wife. this hotel is named as a" house hotel ", any time in the past that i have stayed in a House Hotel it has been up market, not so for this one. On arrival and looking for the reception you are directed to the bar area, which doubles up as the reception. as there is not a dedicated one. we were allocated room 3 which was located approx. above the entrance door of the bar. The room was very dated, although very clean but was in need of a major refurb. There was everything you would expect in a hotel room, although old and dated. In this day and age we were still looking at a small square television which could not show the full screen as all programmes are now broadcasted in widescreen. the bed was the most uncomfartable I have slept in for a long time, lumpy and in need of a new matress. The bathroom was shocking for a hotel in 2011 just one look at the ceilling indicated just how much this place was in need of some work, if you wanted a bath you had to use the shower to add cold water as the cold tap would'nt budge. the bar is open very late and if you tried to get a sleep after 11.00 it was almost impossible as the smokers stood under the room window, where you were educated in the social, sexual and personal exploits of the locals complete with the added adjectives that go with it. Breakfast was fine although served in the bar as the hotel no longer has a restaurant, this has been taken over and is now an indian which we had a very nice meal in. This restaurant produced a constant aroma of curry even in the bedroom during the night.Overall I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. after a walk down through the town I realised that for a very little extra I could have stayed in a much higher standard hotel or guest house. I feel that on occasion the owner should take some time out and spend a night in each of the rooms and ask himself if he would be happy to pay to stay there, I think I know what the answer would be. After staying in this hotel I now understand why groups such as Travel lodge thrive, if you book with them you know the standard that is on offer. I would like to add praise to the lady who served the breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings, she was always very pleasent, had a huge smile and very attentive.

“Decent stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2011

was booked here for a night
the rooms are nice about a 3-star rating but was a little taken aback by the carpet on the floor in the bathroom
the breakfast was average nothing great.
located close to good restaurants and a supermarket
seem to have a busy bar ..but none of us were alcohol lovers to comment on that

“Very basic”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

After reading some of the reviews here, we expected the worst, but I have to say our stay was all by all acceptable. Yes, the hotel is hard to find (the restaurant under it 'spice palace' is more visible) and the combination of a restaurant, a bar and a hotel is clearly too much to cope with. The room was spacious but in desperate need of some new investments. The bathroom is basic as well, but ok. Take care in the slippery bath though, I almost broke my leg. The people at the bar (who apparently 'run' the hotel as well) were friendly. The room was a bit noisy as it was at the street side of the hotel. We were lucky to find the bar at a very calm evening, so no noise from it neither. Breakfast in that same smokey bar downstairs was terrible though.
