28 Oct 2009 | Trip type: Friends getaway

3 of is took advantage of a "special" deal of £20.00 pppn bb&em on the Sunday. We arrived around 12.30 p.m. and were promptly told that we could not book in until 3.00p.m.
When we asked if we could go to the lounge for a drink or a coffee we were told they were not open as they had a record/cd sale going on in the lounge but there was a few eating places in the main street if we wanted something. As two of us have walking difficulties and it was chucking down with rain we were rather loathe to walk about however we did find a nice wee cafe that did us proud. We returned to this sad old hotel which was badly run down and given the keys to our rooms. Luckily my friends husband was with us and managed to cope with our luggage as no one was going to help us get them to our rooms which I must say were clean and adequate. We dressed for dinner and have to say the starter of pate was nice. I ordered the cold chicken salad and my friends the roast beef dinner and her husband had the fish. My friends enjoyed their meals however my chicken when I turned it over was undercooked. The one waitress serving the whole room of maybe 23 diners asked us if everything had been ok as she cleared the plates to which I replied well yes if I wanted food poisoning as the chicken was raw in parts to which she said oh sorry and walked away. We had ordered the cheesecake for dessert and it came swimming in watery cream and soggy because it had been sitting so long. So I can only say my meal was rotten.
When we left next day we never even got a hope you enjoyed your stay or bye nice to see you hope you come again. All in all a big disappointment and an embarrassing experience for me as I had rated it an ok hotel to my friends. Never again.

IThank you for posting your recent comments. The Receptionist did provide the correct information that our check in time is any time after 3pm, however I was upset to learn that you were unable to be served a drink at the time of your arrival and will investigate this with the appropriate members of staff. I was delighted to learn that your friends enjoyed their meals although I was very concerned to read the comments of your own main course. Please be assured that had this been brought to the attention of the waiting staff at the beginning of your meal this would have been investigated by the Chef and rectified immediately with a new dish being served to you. I was pleased to read that you scored us highly for our location and cleanliness and that you found our rooms of good standard. Feedback such as yours is always welcome in helping us to improve our hotel and the service we offer our guests in the future.

this hotel was very dirty with big balls of fluff behind doors, dirty windowsills and grubby bedding. Friends single room had a leaky ceiling so requested another room which was very dark and dreary. Food was adequate but sometimes poorly cooked . would not recommend to anyone

I was most disappointed to read your posting regarding your stay with us and would like to apologise for the standard of cleanliness within your bedroom. Whilst there can be no excuse for what you have described, I am confident that had you brought this matter to our attention at the time of your stay we could have immediately resolved your concerns. The standards of cleanliness you describe are certainly not in keeping with our usual high standards; as you can read from the reviews below, other guests describe the hotel as clean with excellent food. I was pleased to note that you scored our location and service very highly.

We booked the Abba tribute night, the priceof £45 including dinner bed and breakfast was excellent. The hotel as noted in other reviews could do with a costly refurbishment, but it was clean and warm. The location was excellent. The staff all very friendly and may I say hardworked as the hotel was quite busy. The manager was very friendly and helpful, the evening meal was as good as you could get from a 3 or 4 star hotel, breakfast a bit basic but very tasty. On leaving we were told by other guests that it was being downgraded to 1 star which is a shame as we would never have gone if it was just 1 star, but after our experience this weekend we will definately be back.

This was our fourth stay at the Dreadnought and it was the best stay yet. It is consistently one of the cheapest on the Easy Breaks website, yet it is in one of the best locations.

If you've read any of the other reviews, you will already know that the hotel is a wee bit rough around the edges and could do with a decent refurbishment, but if you can overlook this, you will enjoy your stay.

The food is excellent quality and all the staff are friendly and helpful. You may have to grab a water jug, condiments or a piece of cutlery from a nearby table, but this isn't a massive hardship once you come to expect it.

The inclusive DB&B menu gave adequate choices of starter, main course and desert and the staff seemed quite happy to cater for any requests for slight changes (eg, chips instead of boiled potatoes and ice cream instead of custard). If you were feeling flush, you could pay a bit extra for a sirloin steak (£8.50), a prawn cocktail or a cheese selection. We, like most of the guests in our vicinity, didn't bother and the inclusive evening meals were excellent. The fish, in particular, was a good choice every evening. The fried haddock in batter was top notch and worthy of the finest chippy!

The breakfast each morning was an unchanging, fairly basic affair and nowt to write home about, but it was a perfectly adequate. It consisted of a fried egg, piece of bacon, a sausage, a potato scone and a plum tomato. This was served with toast and butter, preserves and a pot of tea or coffee. Decent coffee it was, too. I was actually offered scrambled eggs on our final morning, but they don't seem to want to shout about the options. HP Brown Sauce was available (sometimes) on the table at the front of the dining room.

The rooms were kept adequately clean throughout our five-night stay. The bed was made up and the room was tidied every day, the towels were changed once and the tea/coffee basket was refreshed every day. The complimentary hand soap, shampoo and bubble bath were also replenished once, even though we never had a bath in our room!

The TV in the room offered BBC1, BBC2, STV and Ch 4 and the reception was nice and clear.

The car park was a bit of a squeeze and, if you arrive back at the hotel too late in the day, you may have to find some on-street parking.

The nearby pubs - Claymore, Bridgend Inn and Lade Inn- all offer great real ales and I would recommend all of them to beer lovers.

There was no wireless internet, which was a bit disappointing for internet addicts like myself.

Overall, this was another great stay. At the price we paid, we won't complain about any minor niggles and we'll definitely be back.

I would like to apologies for the mistake made with their booking on check in. Most of our rooms have baths and yes the few we have with showers tend to be smaller. I am please that they enjoyed there breakfast and if they would like to return, I would ensure them of our best rates and ensure they had one of our bigger rooms.
