We stayed for two nights in the Arden House and this was absolutely fabulous. After a long ride from Skye, we were welcomed by our host, who offered us tea in the living room with various cookies and cakes, which was a very pleasant welcome indeed.
We stayed in one of the smaller rooms, which was still substantial in size with all the details thought of (fresh water in crystal carafe, etc.). The breakfast was excellent in that after eating Scottish breakfasts for a week, this was the first one that actually tasted healthy. Every day they also serve a dish of the day. The breakfast is really something to take time for.
While the Arden House is beautifully located (though not too easy to find), Calander itself is not too interesting and rather dead at night. We had a hard time to find a pub, although there is one good restaurant. However, if you have a car, the Trossachs are very close, as is Stirling (and Edinburgh and Glasgow).
