“Lots of character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

Had high expectations due to reports from friends. Friendly reception on arrival with the offer of tea and biscuits. We were upgraded to the Barrie suite which was quite large (already adequately described in other reviews) and decorated in a style which suited the age of the building. The room was a bit cool as the central heating radiators were not hot. There was a supplementary electric heater in the bedroom though. Don't know what it will be like in the winter. Our evening meal was excellent and the service exceptional.
Take a torch with you and have it by the bed. The breaker tripped as I was going to the toilet in the middle of the night leaving me to stumble about in the pitch dark...there's a lot of furniture in the rooms and I think I hit every one.
All in all a relaxing stay and we will be going back at some point.

“Really Charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

Just back from a lovely break in Callander staying at the Roman Camp Hotel.
Loved this hotel with it's Idilic setting. Nestled right on the edge of the river in the heart of the village yet secluded in it's own beautiful gardens, complete with pet peacocks.
This relitivly small hotel oozes character features. Like the grand fireplaces, turrets and a fabulous library with hidden secret room to mention a few. My friend and I had a wonderful time relaxing in cosy lounge/sitting rooms in front of blazing fires or exploring all the hotels nooks and crannies.
We ate in the restaurant the first night which was included in the package (otherwise quite pricey). Expectations were very high and the Roman Camp did not disappoint. In fact all the food was absolutely beautiful.
Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Thank you Roman Camp for a lovely stay.

“Puts the D in different class”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2011

Like finding an oasis in the desert when you arrive at the Roman Camp Hotel. Quaint, quirky but different class. We occupied a suite (Barrie) with walk in shower, large bath tub incl. jacuzzi facility, giving us a wonderfully relaxing break, and having viewed a few other rooms, doubt if they would have made the stay any less enjoyable. Service can be a trifle slow (on occasions) but seems unimportant when you are in an environment where time appears endless. Food is of the highest quality; prepared beautifully and tasted wonderful. Library, Drawing room, conservatory were beautiful rooms to meet other guests and chill out with coffee or an evening malt, in front of roaring fires. Whilst not inexpensive it is an establishment not to be missed and I recommend booking the best room you can afford to maximise the experience.

Room Tip: Preferably, get a room in the older part of the building, not that there appears a downside to any r...

“Beautiful Country Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

We stayed for 4 nights in September, The hotel has beautiful grounds right on the river. As others have said, driving down the lane to get to the hotel seems to take you to another world.

We stayed in room Lady Esher and our friends were in South. Both are in the original house, upstairs. The curved staircase with a "rope" bannister, while quaint, make it difficult for people with limited mobility. I would recommend ground floor rooms for folks like us.

Lady Esher is a large room and the bathroom has a large tub with overhead shower. South has a shower. Both were comfortable, but Lady Esher was the better of the two. Being upstairs, the views are somewhat limited to overlooking rooftops unless one looks "straight out". However watching the peacocks on the roofs in the morning was fun.

The dining room is magnificent, with the food to match. Service is excellent. There are several rooms for drinks before dinner and coffee after; Parlor, Library, Conservatory and Bar. With so many choices, people seems to spread out and traveler conversations become limited to your own party. More "hotel like" not "BnB like". Wine is a little expensive.

Yes, we would go back

Room Tip: Older folks should stay on the ground floor.
