We have just had our third (4th?) visit to the Captains Club and I love it more and more each time we go. This time, because of a very preferential rate, I booked us a suite and it was simply delightful - made me wish I'd booked us 2 nights instead of one.
The staff, particularly in the restaurant, are warm, professional and very friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. The bar is one of my absolute favourites and if I lived nearby I would go to the Captains Club simply for what a comfortable, modern, attractive place it is to spend an hour or two just relaxing with drinks. My husband loves the place too. They know how to mix him a Cuba Libre and he appreciates the excellent service and attention to detail they demonstrate every time we go.
We mostly tend to go on holiday with our extended family so we try at least once a year to have a day or so away together. So many hotels, although luxurious and comfortable, can fall into the realms of being a little old fashioned and sometimes stuffy and a little snooty (particularly the Exclusive group of which we have stayed in all their hotels). The Captains Club is refreshingly modern, both in style and attitude. It sits very naturally in a beautiful setting and is decorated just perfectly. I love the way the windows, the bar area and even the staircase have the look of luxury yacht (you'll know what I mean if you go there). Bedrooms are comfortable, spacious and very light and airy and all have beautiful views. Bathrooms are bright and modern and this time we had 2! Huge walk in shower with a fabulously powerful blast form the showerhead. The towels are huge too and things like that can make such a difference.
Although the food in the restaurant is a little pricey at times, it is definitely worth it. Every meal I have ever had has been perfect and this recent visit was no exception. I had the most beautiful roast pheasant and my husband had cod wrapped in pancetta. And although mine did come with a gorgeous mash I still ordered a side of their hand cut chips, 1. because I wanted to 'mop up' the scrummy jus that came with my pleasant and 2. because they are simply heavenly - crispy and crumbly and very fat! Which is what I would be if I ate there every day :o)
The clientele can be an unusual mix and you tend to see people dressed in anything from floor length gowns(!) to jeans and t-shirts. The age range is just as far-reaching.
We will definitely revisit The Captains Club again and again - we already introduced it to my sister and husband who fell in love with the place too. It really is a case of what's not to like...just hope it never changes and the staff don't either. They have got it right and other hotels should take note.
