“Excellent hotel with superb views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

I and 13 female friends have just spent a Reunion weekend at the Fowey Hotel, staying in seaview rooms with lovely views over the Fowey Estuary and out to sea. We could not fault the Hotel in any way. The rooms are very comfortable with very good tea and coffee making facilities (in how many hotels do you get a cafetiere with real coffee, and a teapot, rather than having to make your hot drink direct in the cup?), all the usual bathroom goodies, and plenty of cupboard and drawer space for clothing etc. Our Group Booking was handled very helpfully and capably by Samantha, and the prearranged Private Dinner for 14 in the Piano Room was delicious, as were the breakfasts - all freshly cooked, with a wide choice on the menu (including Porridge with whisky, poached haddock and kippers, plus all the usual egg & bacon etc options) and a good cold buffet table. The lunchtime Snack & sandwich menu was also very good.
Fowey is an attractive town to wander around, although the access to the town and back is quite steep (hence the good views from the hotel!). Can recommend Sam's Bistro for excellent seafood - also Sam's on the Beach or the Rashleigh Inn at Polkerris - a pretty cove a few miles away towards St Austell for good food at luinchtime or in the evening, if you can tear yourself away from the Hotel itself.
All in all, a great base for exploring some of South Cornwall or to spend a few relaxing days in
comfort with friendly and welcoming hospitality.

Room Tip: Definitely worth having a seaview room, possibly best on the 3rd floor - there is a good lift(old fa...

“A bargain break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We had a two night bargain break, out of season but blessed with brilliant, clear, if chilly, skies. We had upgraded to a sea-view (room 208) and can only describe the view as superb. We agree with other reviewers that a sea view is a big plus, as is pre-booking a parking space. We found the welcome and service excellent and attentive without being obtrusive. The quality of the food we found excllent, largely home or local produce, well prepared and presented, athough the dinner menu was slightly restricted - possibly reflecting the care taken with each item. We did not find any signs of lack of TLC in the decoration or maintenance and (contary to the experience of some others) were particularly struck with the sparkling freshness of our bathroom. As a matter of personal preference we would have preferred a duvet on our bed. There was a slight problem with the radiator in our room as it only seemed to have two speeds - flat-out or stop! In retrospect perhaps we should have mentioned this to the management, but as our stay was short and we were coping it was overlooked. A more uptodate TV with a wider choice of channels might please some but was not important to us. Similarly no indication of internet access was seen, but again did not affect us. A delightful period gem in this hotel is undoubtedly the lift! It should have a preservation order placed on it! In sum a delightful hotel with a slightly old fashioned air that promised (and delivered) quality, service and comfort. We hope to revisit.

Room Tip: Sea view a big plus and dont forget to book car park space.

Dear Bill042,
Thank you for your feedback. I am delighted you enjoyed your recent stay with us, and you are right, we really are blessed with our position here overlooking the harbour. Thank you for your kinds comments about our service standards; this is an area we are constantly working on, and it is a great encouragement to us all to know we are doing well.
We are in the process of switching over to duvets in all rooms, as we appreciate this is a more popular option these days, and we are also awaiting delivery of brand new flat screen televisions for those rooms which do not yet have one.
We do offer free Wifi at the hotel, which is available in all public areas, however it is in our plans to extend this to all bedrooms in the near future.
I do hope to welcome you back again in the near future, and you will be able to see evidence of our ongoing improvements. Kind regards, Samantha

“A step back in time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

A charming hotel, idealic setting and nice place to stay. The hotel is a little dated and starting to need a little TLC here and there such as bathroom tiling, shower screen and size of TV but not enough to spoil a stay.
Staff were all first class, we only had bed and breakfast but the breakfast was first class, lots of choice and served in a wonderful dinning room.
We were initially put in a room with a sea view on the third floor but were disappointed as it had one small window that rattled and the room felt oppressive also no wifi coverage. We upgraded to a 1st floor room for £20 extra per night and it was well worth it, the room was bigger, two windows, one of which could be seen from the bed. Suddenly the hotel went from 3 star to 4 star in our opinion.

Room Tip: Avoid 3rd floor with sea view as not a great view and only small window for light. Still a nice room...

Dear RocketIII,
Thank you for posting your comments. It is a shame that on arrival you were initially disappointed, but I am pleased that the team were able to rectify this for you and that in turn you went on to enjoy your stay with us. We have an ongoing programme of refurbishment in the hotel and are gradually working our way through all the bedrooms, as well as updating the public areas. We are awaiting delivery of new flat screen televisions, and there are plans in place to extend our Wifi coverage onto all floors in the near future.
I hope to welcome you back again soon, to show you the improvements we have made.
Kind regards, Samantha

A weekend at this hotel is the ideal way of winding down. Excellent food with good service, and large, roomy lounges to relax in. The bedrooms we occupied were spacious and comfortable and those with a sea or estuary view have an added bonus. The staff were attentive and helpful throughout. Top marks!
