“Sad place”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

A dated 1960’s/1970’s compact high-rise hotel needing a massive investment. Operating in receivership, or was it administration, can’t remember, there is a statutory notice on the wall giving details. Many hotels are in this financial limbo for long periods and are often better for it.
Mid week the clientele seemed mainly low budget contract workers. Staff seem to be battling on, working on a shoe string, trying hard, hanging onto their jobs. Considering the price paid it was just about bearable. But not all of the time. I was there for about five days. I had three rooms. They would have been pretty good about twenty years ago but the furniture is now thread bare in parts, or just plain worn out and dirty. Very poor on sound isolation between rooms too. It’s pot luck if you have a room with noisy guests either side or not. I moved rooms because of this. One of the lifts was out of order and the other one would only go up before going down. The restaurant for breakfast was like a film set of a basic Russian tourist hotel in communist days. The place just hasn’t moved on. Limited service time but linen tablecloths and napkins and if you want a basic breakfast of cereal, juice, bacon, egg, sausage etc then that’s fine. I wanted a none fat breakfast which narrowed the choice down to egg and beans. They only once had beans available in the days I stayed. Crazy.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at the hotel, I am sorry that certain elements of your stay did not meet up to your expectations. Although the hotel is, as you say, in administration we are gradually re-decorating certain areas of the hotel where we can although this does take time. The breakfast choice has recently been extended and does now include yoghurts, apples and a choice of fruit segments, I am sorry that beans were not available on the days you stayed.

Your point regarding noisy guests is something we take very seriously, and we do monitor this throughout the night to ensure that all guests are as comfortable as possible and not unduly disturbed during the night. Thanks again for your review.

“If you want a quiet weekend away, don't stay here.”

The hotel is a bit dated, rooms are basic but ok if you just want somewhere to crash, the Walls are thin and you can easily hear adjoining rooms & what they are discussing etc. Breakfast was reasonable, staff were friendly. The problem is that the hotel accepts stag parties and ultimately there will be boisterous beered up lads rolling in at silly o'clock ! Stay here only if you're a party animal.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay on Trip Advisor, although the hotel does take groups at weekends, the vast majority are well behaved and considerate to other guests. However, despite every effort by our staff to monitor this, there are occasions when the comfort of other guests is disrupted.

On a positive note thank you for the kind comment about the staff, I will be sure to pass on your comments.

“Once again no issues”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

I was one of the few people who stayed over the christmas period to visit friends and family and once again found the hotel to be be fine for the price I paid. Staff were once again friendly and the secure car park round the back very handy. Yes its faded, but the room was fine, the bathroom clean and its handy for getting around either by car or bus/foot/metro. The vending machines in the lobby were also good value for those late night snacks. There was some doubt if it was going to be open during the christmas period, but I'm glad it was.

“Value for Money!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

i recently stayed here at the weekend with my husband for a night out at Newcasle can i just say ignore the bad reviews! Yes the decor is outdated but lets face it you dont go to a hotel to sit and look at the wallpaper! staff were very helpful and polite.. May i add its was immaculate and im the type of person who ALWAYS takes flash wippes when i stay anywhere but there wasnt even a speck of dust.. got a taxi which came instantly to pick us up it took 5 mins to get into Newcastle... also it was only £9 return into Newastle, which i onsider heap as we didnt return until 2.15 in the morning... Breakfast was lovely cant complain 1 bit about this hotel, what can you expect for the money... Really it was worth the money just to have friendly people serving you!!!

Room Tip: we were on floor 2 and i was fine for us..

“desolate”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

This is a £20 hotel, I was one of about 5 other people checked in to what used to be a quality hotel. By staying here, you seem to be subsidising the cost of having security watching the property.

It is clean, and functional, but don't think you're getting a discount. It needs a complete rebuild.

Tv is an old, tiny analogue set. Didn't realise they still existed.

Thank you for taking the time over the festive period to wrte a review of your recent stay at the hotel. Over the period you stayed at the hotel we had several guests who were utilising the hotel as a base to visit friends and family over the Xmas period. The TVs are gradually being updated as and when required, but in the main are fine.
