The hotel is conveniently located just off the A1 and just outside Gateshead in what initially appears to be an industrial estate but on a closer look is an area being regenerated as a commercial centre. This hotel was previously the Tulip Inn. There is free parking and good transport links in the area. A bus stop just around the corner costs about £1.80 to the Gateshead Interchange or to the centre of Newcastle and takes about 10-15 minutes. A taxi costs about £10.00. There is another Premier Inn about half a mile away, so if booking a taxi, make sure they know which one you need. Next door to the hotel is a row of modern shops including a bakery, a cafe, a gym and some furniture shops. There is also an HSBC bank and ATM machines nearby.
The reception of the hotel is fairly spacious and there is a nice soft seating area if you are waiting for people. My check-in was quick and friendly. There are 7 floors and two lifts, one larger accessible lift at the front and another smaller lift towards the back of the building. I had a room on the 3rd floor for two nights, a typical Premier Inn double room, the only difference was that the sink was at the side of the room itself, whilst the shower and toilet were behind a sliding door. The shower is a good power shower with complimentary shampoo/shower gel.
The room had a large comfortable double bed, television with Freeview channels, clothes storage area, desk, chair, lamp, desk fan, Corby trouser press and an electric heater. Everything was clean and in good condition. The windows in the room are double-glazed but weren't that good at keeping the outside noise out. You can still hear a very low hum coming from the nearby A1 and sirens of police cars passing in the night but it is generally quiet enough for sleeping.
Sadly my first night was marred by other guests coming in during the early hours with several interruptions until 4am (it was the morning of New Years Day). Others have told me this might be a particular problem here at weekends since it is close to Newcastle for nightlife. The second night was perfect. If you're staying midweek it shouldn't be a problem but at weekends and during holidays you might get your sleep disturbed. I don't blame the hotel for this.
There is a restaurant and bar on site just adjacent to the reception. The menu seems good and the prices are reasonable but I didn't have an evening meal at the hotel. They did an offer of 3 courses and a drink for £22.00. I did eat breakfast at the hotel on both mornings which is £7.99 all-you-can-eat buffet and there are a wide selection of good breakfast items with friendly service.
This is a very good Premier Inn and the staff are all exceptional. I enjoyed my stay here aside from the disturbances on the first night. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
