“Great lodge but electricity costs are a rip off!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

These lodges are in a great location in Meathop, just 2 miles from Grange over sands. The Lodge itself was perfect, 2 decent sized bedrooms. spa bath, dry sauna, open plan living room , dining room and kitchen. The Kitchen was well equipped with a dishwasher, electric hobs, fan assisted oven and microwave as well as every utensil you would need. I would have scored this lodge as excellent but I have knocked off a score for the electricity costs. As a previous reviewer has mentioned I also was told the electricity costs were lower than they are. When I booked I was told that for the 3 days we were there we would use £10-£15 in electricity. So you can imagine how shocked I was to find we had used £10 of electricity between arriving at 5pm on Friday to when we left to go out for the day at 10.30am on Saturday. We were out in the daytime and never used the dishwasher, only had 1 heater on through the night (And on a timer) and still managed to use £33 of electricity in 2 and a half days (£11 per day). My Home Electricity is £45 per month (£1.45 per day and I work from home so have heating on all day) so their charge is a total rip off and they obviously use it as an extra income stream on top of the cost of the lodge. Most self catering holidays have electricity included in the price, who would want a break and have to spend most of that time worrying how much more they would have to cough up .

Every other aspect of this lodge was perfect and if the electricity wasn't a rip off I would be booking a 7 day break in the summer already. But due to the electricity costs I will be looking elsewhere. The staff at the hotel were great, friendly and full of ideas of how to spend your time in the lake district

In summary, the electricity added over 10% to the cost of the 3 day break, so If you are considering booking add 10% to the total cost to get an idea of the real cost.

I have scored "Service" the lowest as I consider electricity as part of the service they provide. Likewise I have scored Value low as it increased the total cost by over 10%

Room Tip: Add 10% to the total cost to take into consideration the expensive electricity costs

As can be seen by the photograph uploaded by this guest there was snow and ice on the ground. They stayed here during a very cold spell when temperatures were down to -10c.
During extreme cold spells electricity costs can reach £10 per day as the heating systems tries
to maintain a stable warm temperature inside. See another of our guests reviews saying that she had the heating on full for 3 whole days and it cost just £15

Normal electric costs will be £5 or £6 per day (winter) and even less than this in the summer.
However if you decide to stay in the sauna for hours then you can expect a little more.

“Nice but electricity costs not so nice!”

We had a week away at the Woodlands pine lodges in Feb 12 so being very cold we had to heat the cabin up. To our surprise we ended up using around £10 a day! Worst of all we were not even in during the day so this was just for evenings! We ended up sleeping in the lounge/dinning room kitchen area so we only had to heat up one room. It was very cold and did not enjoy our stay as much as we probably should of as we were constantly worried about how much electricity we were using! We were told when we arrived that the electricity would not be that much but were told a different story when we left and that £10 per half a day for electricity costs were normal!?

The location is perfect and the cabin was well equipped and relatively clean. The carpets could do with a bit of a clean though!

“Lovely relaxing break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012 via mobile

Had a lovely stay in sycamore pine lodge (one of the old ones)
No problems with anything, sauna was brilliant, had cooker, washer, dishwasher, brilliant shower and bath, although our bath was only average size and not a corner one like i thought we would have, but worked well. Heating cost £15 for weekend and we had it on constantly.
We would happily return again but would try a new lodge next time as there was a slight smell of dogs, not enough to be a problem though.

We had a short stay in a pine lodge in October half term week. Very friendly staff - nothing was too much trouble for them including food that was not on the menu. Good beer if you like it and overall excellent value for money. Very clean as well

“Great food in a pet friendly bar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

I didn't stay at the Woodlands hotel as a guest but visited to have a drink one night and a meal the next night. Well behaved dogs are allowed in the bar area where it is also possible to enjoy a meal from the restaurant menu. Being a dog owner this made a refreshing change. The food was freshly prepared, very enjoyable and reasonably priced.
