“Christmas at Angel & Royal, Grantham”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

On two occasions we have spent Christmas at the Angel & Royal and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. From the pleasant reception, the stocking outside the door on Christmas Day, the carol singers on Christmas Eve and the superb meals. All have been a joy. Log fires in the bar, silly games and great company. Staff are there to make your stay as festive as possible and they do not disappoint. Christmas Dinner in the Kings Room is magical. To top it all we have made friends who we are still in touch with. The hotel is steeped in history and looks old but has all the modern conveniences to make sure you have a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Price not bad either. One couple who thought they were going home on Boxing Day enjoyed it so much they stayed another day.

Thank you for your comments, the whole team got in to the festive spirit and enjoyed being at work as much as you enjoyed being here. We find that the Christmas Package is about joining in and having food and I am delighted that you had a great time - we hope to see you again this year maybe?

“Birthday celebration stop over”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

I spent one night here after attending a birthday party at the hotel. Pleasantly surprised by the bedrooms, spacious, comfortable & quiet. My sons girlfriend had read it was "haunted" beforehand and was hoping not to encounter "the white lady" who apparently frequents the 2nd floor bedrooms. Was so funny as we were given our keys to our rooms on the second floor!
Nice time had at the party, good buffet too.
Lots of original features giving a good atmosphere to the place. Helpful reception staff.
Breakfast was plentiful and my only criticism was the food was warm instead of hot & the coffee was sent back as it was luke warm, it was promptly replaced.
Good value room booked through booking.com.

Thank you for your lovely comments that I have passed on to the team that was working that weekend. I am sorry that breakfast was not as hot as you would of liked, this has been investigated with the Head Chef and established the problem, which we have rectified. We do hope that we will see you again.

“short break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Short break in Oct 2011.Room 214 - a very comfortable room with a small separarate lounge (sofa & TV),comfortable bedroom & good sized bathroom. NOTE: 4 steps down to bedroom..Excellent stay- all staff efficient, helpful and pleasant. Old historic building-no lifts to upper floors but porterage available. Suspect this room could be hot in summer (electric fan & air conditioning unit in room , but OK on our visit.Good attention to details, lack of which are otherwise annoying eg hooks on back of doors; spacious integral surface around wash basin ( for toiletries - no 'head banging' on a low shelf);separate fitted shaving mirror.Sheets & blankets available instead of ( hot ) duvets.Ate in 3 different places viz: Bistro,The Prince of Wales suite,& King's Room -good menu choice & good quality food. Not sure if Bistro is in keeping with the historic character of the building but King's Room - great..Pleasant,non intrusive, easy listening & popular Classics background music- no loud rock/'head banging' stuff.Good breakfasts served from the kitchen, with lots of choice including 3 fish dishes at no extra charge (unlike some other (chain ) group hotels).Angel bar had a choice of 3 whisky liqueurs ! Seating could be more comfortable in the Angel bar - a few easy soft chairs would be good.Bistro- a bit dark ( green walls) -a 'warming ' rich burgundy colour would complement the other cream coloured walls & the historic character of the building.Lighted candles in the large fireplaces, when not in use, would add character, warmth & ambience.Small plastic studs are needed on the protective glass table tops to stop them, annoyingly, sliding around.Temporary problem with hot water supply one evening but sorted out in 1 hour,All in all, an excellent enjoyable stay.

“A pleasant stay in a very traditional hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

We stayed for one night on a trip back from Yorkshire. The Angel and Royal is a very traditional style town centre hotel. The welcome was good and the room (with four poster) was comfortable and had the facilities you would expect.

We ate in the bistro where we felt the menu was a bit mundane, probably because it was before Christmas. Service was pleasant and efficient.

Breakfast the following morning was quite adequate but, again, nothing to write home about.

All-in-all, a pleasant stay but nothing to shout about.

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay at the Angel and Royal, I am sorry you did not enjoy all aspects of the stay - I have noted your comments about the food and will recommend that we review our menu that we serve over the Christmas period. We would be delighted to see you again, if you are ever in this area.

“Angel & Royal”

We were having a look through hotels in Lincolnshire and found this on the Best Western website with a number of different deals - we chose a good value Dinner, Bed and Breakfast deal.

I then emailed to advise the hotel if they offered anything for a special occasion such as birthday and where exactly the car park was (It is behind the hotel and not on the main high street, watch out for Grantham's 1 way system if you miss it!) and received a quick and helpful response within hours. They very kindly upgraded us from a Superior to a Suite room and advised we could bring a birthday cake with us to be served after the meal

Plenty of parking right opposite the hotel. The room was very clean and nicely decorated (and in keeping with the the age/tradition of hotel) with flat screen tv (2 because we had a suite!). Beds were very comfy and warm.As we were 1st down for Dinner we had a nice warm spot next to the lovely large fireplace and quick service. Food was good and reasonable choice of set menus for an inclusive deal.

Breakfast service was also good (so quick we didnt have time to look at the cooked menu!).Only had the cooked breakfast but the usual choice of toast, croissants etc was also available.

I chose this hotel mainly on its reviews for good customer service and wasnt disappointed. In current times you pay a lot for a bland (chain) hotel and average (if you are lucky) customer service. I felt this was really good value as it is clean and tastefully modernised in the traditional style not losing it's historic features.

Room Tip: This hotel has no lift and the suite we stayed in was on the 2nd floor.
