I have just returned from a wonderfully relaxing 2 night break at The Culdearn Hotel. In fact it was so relaxing that it felt like I had been away for a week! The hotel has a wonderfully relaxed, homely feel, not unlike returning home to your parents for the holidays, except much, much better! This is hard to achieve, either hosts are too attentive or not enough in my opinion and Sonia and William have got it just right - magically appearing just at the right moment to take your drinks order or to recommend local attractions. The hotel is beautifullly run, my room was lovely, very comfortable bed and a large spotless bathroom. But I have to say the hidden gem of this hotel has to be the standard of the food. Oh my lord, it is good, very good, if you go, have the fillet steak - 8oz of prime Aberdeen Angus - its no wonder this hotel features in the Scotch Beef Club.

The location of this hotel is also very, very good. I arrived a little "green" of the local area but within 20 minutes I was sitting at Loch Morlich in the beautiful July sunshine wondering if I was dreaming! This part of Scotland is so very beautiful, I had no idea. Next day and 20 minutes in the opposite direction I arrived at the fairytale Ballindalloch Castle - lovely, lovely castle well worth a visit - and bar 6 others we had it to ourselves! I think whatever you are looking for, be it walking, fishing, shooting, whiskey trials, cashmere outlets, Highland Games or just sitting by a Loch - this area has it all and The Culdearn is the icing on the cake! Fabulous weekend - thank you and I will be back!

This is a very nice hotel to stay in to explore the Highlands etc. It is not a riot of fun but a comfortable place. I was placed in front of the window for breakfast sothat I could enjoy seeing the red squirrels outside enjoying their breakfast! Rooms are well equipped and the food is above average.Tables are close together as the dining room is small. The cooked food at breakfast was less good. The location of the hotel is disappointing; more or less on a main road near an industrial estate but there is no noise in the hotel from traffic etc. However, there is no view of note from the hotel and the parking is a bit of a squeeze. The hosts are very friendly.

We feel that this guest may have misinterpreted the view from the house which overlooks the front garden, a small park area and then into beautiful woodland. Yes there is a road in between but it is a minor road rather than major road which leads to an industrial area albeit half a mile away and therefore none of his comments are really relevant to the environment around Culdearn House. If this guest had come in the winter rather than visiting us in spring, he would have seen the beautiful Cromdale hills covered in snow but, which at the moment, are hidden by the trees which are in leaf.

My wife and I travelled to Granton on Spey for a two night stay as I had an appointment with a friend in the locale.
On arrival we were greeted by William who showed us to our room and who diligently showed us the various workings of the bath and handbasin!
The room was very clean and the bed comfortable. We were told that dinner orders were taken between 6.45 and 7.45 p.m. This is somewhat earlier than we would expect given the fact that the evenings are longer at this time of the year.
William was a genial and helpful host. However I was very surprised that when I arrived back at the Hotel the first evening and requested a bottle of wine to be taken to our room so we could unwind after our 9 hour drive I was told this was not permitted in case of spillage. Apart from the fact that sales of two bottles of champagne over the two nights went a begging, I felt a little that perhaps that as a couple who have stayed in some of the most exclusive hotels in the world, that this was most odd! ( We didn't order the champagne in the lounge before dinner as it would have been a little OTT.)
My main criticism of the Hotel I'm afraid has to be Sonia. IMHO she was abrupt almost to the point of being rude. We felt that we were merely being tolerated. My wife was asked to remove her walking boots before entering the hotel. Again a lack of appreciation for the guest, who in our case would have removed our boots had they been in any way dirty or muddy without prompting!!
'Some guests bring joy when the arrive, others when they leave' was above the room key holder, and quote, 'your free to leave' was Sonias parting shot after paying the bill.
Guests like to pampered and spoilt a little not treated as a necessary nuisance, we shall not be returning.

Good Gracious what a backlash from this guest from Wales whom we are not allowed to name but he can name us and staff personally. What did we do to receive such a personal attack? He seemed such a nice man when making the booking which he continually chopped and changed but which we tolerated. Unfortunately we are only 4 stars not 5 stars as he points out and perhaps he thought we were not paying him enough attention but we do not believe this to be the case as we remember chatting to him and his wife and assisting them about various walks and things to do in the area. We also remember them enjoying their evening meal and still being in the dining room well after 9.30pm having had a leisurely pre-dinner time perusing menus and enjoying drinks and canapes in the Drawing Room so we do not agree with his comment that dinner is too early in the evening because by having it at our time it does enable guests to take a walk or visit a night-watch event after their meal if they wish to do so. As for the coment regarding champagne, why is it OTT to drink this in the lounge - other guest did that evening and do so all the time?

We are pleased to note that their room was 'clean' and this is down to us, the owners taking great pride in our business which is also our home and also mainly down to the wonderful guests respecting this and removing their walking books before entering the house without being asked to do so.

As for the statement regarding the coment by us "you'r free to leave now", yes this was said AFTER the guest asked if HE 'was free to go' following him being worried that his credit card payment would not through as had been the case in a previous hotel. Both parties laughed at this so we are extremely puzzled as to his comment. There was no intended rudeness and in our opinion none given throughout his stay.

Finally we would say that ALL our guests are important to us and this is why so many of them have become friends and return year after year.

What can I say about this wonderful hotel. From the moment we stepped out of the snow and into the house we were greeted warmly and given everything we needed. The house is beautiful and both living room and dining room have roaring fires. The hosts Sonia and William were very friendly and welcoming. Sonia is very knowledgeable about the local area and where we might like to go. We were upgraded to a luxury room which was a real treat. The bathroom had both a large bath and shower. Perfect for unwinding after a day in the cold. We dined every night in the hotel and were so impressed with the ever changing nightly menu. All the food was imaginative and well presented using locally sourced foods. I believe Sonia also bakes the bread rolls herself. The hotel boasts a vast wine list which was hard to resist and also each bottle had interesting notes as to why the hosts had chosen them. I should also mention the even more impressive Whiskey menu, again with interesting tasting notes and information. The hotel also prides itself on its green credentials and has information in its room guide on how it supports the environment. All in all a wonderful place to stay and I would recommend it to anyone.

In October 2008 we enjoyed a wonderful one-night stay at Culdearn House. The house was both gracious and very comfortable and the dinner served was spectacular. We found a very scenic route to drive from Aberdeen to Granton-on-Spey and the countryside along the way was gorgeous. Granton-on-Spey, with all its stone architecture, was very picturesque. The owners of Culdearn House were very helpful in assisting us with our travel plans from Granton-on-Spey to Edinburough, and we were delighted with their suggestion that House of Bruar would be an interesting place to stop and shop en route. Culdearn House was definitely a destination we would recommend to others.
