I enjoyed a four day break at The Waverley. I thought the rooms generous in size and spotlessly clean. I was also pleasantly surprised how warm the room was when a sudden cold snap had arrived. Breakfasts were good and the staff helpful. An older man I took to be the owner took pride in welcoming the guests which is not common today. Handy for the front and the town. I'd stay there again. I do however think the lifts are ancient and need replacing, though some might say they add to the charm of the place.
If you want to want to eat out I found the Christmas menu at The Troll Cart (Wetherspoons), next to the bus station, extraordinary value. Full turkey Christmas meal with a pint of real ale thrown in all for £7.99. How on earth do they do that?! That's from someoneusually very sceptical about Wetherspoons.
