“Afternoon tea infront of a roaring fire!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

We visited in December for an early Christmas treat having had the experience recommended by a number of friends. We were not disappointed, a lovely roaring fire, a glass of Prosecco, perfect. The sandwiches, cakes etc were very well presented and throughout we had appropriate but unobtrusive service, we were very impressed. As a result of this visit we purchased a number of afternoon tea vouchers for Christmas gifts. I would certainly recommend it a a touch of indulgence!

“OK.........”

Went for Sunday Lunch expecting the restaurant to be really good, particularly as it has received some very positive comments before. It was alright but nothing special. Unfortunately it had a couple of my pet hates. This isn't the cheapest place to go so why, why oh why, would you sit people on a wobbly old table!!!! Every time we tried to cut anything our wine was sloshing around the place!!
Second pet hate, Roof tiles and jam jars!!!!! The starter of Trout mousse with mini Yorkshire puddings tasted fine but was so impossibly annoying to eat on a piece of slate with the mousse in a Kilner jar!!!
Roast beef was delicious but the potatoes were sad little affairs with no seasoning.
The cheese board was fine but it would have been nice to be told what the cheeses were. The service was really nice and you can't argue with the setting (the table glasses weren't clean though!!)
All the way through the meal, tour groups of potential wedding bookings were shown around the restaurant which was also a little disconcerting.
All in all a little disappointing but not without its good points. Will we back, maybe but not in a hurry.

Hi Mark, thank you for your review. We'll be checking all the tables carefully to cure the wobbly one. We have had really positive feedback with regards to the slates used to present certain dishes, so perhaps this is a matter of individual taste, regardless we thank you for your comments. We hope to see you again soon.

“Hotel good(ish), restaurant not so good.....”

Interesting place, I can see why its a popular wedding venue as the building itself is full of character. The reception girls were very friendly and welcoming, polite and gave me a nice complimentary glass of mulled wine. Not sure if this was left over from Christmas but it tasted nice and was a nice warming touch on a cold, wet January night. I was checked in very quickly with the key to Room 13, single room. The room itself was clean and well presented but housekeeping had completely missed the bathroom, with half a cup of tea in the wash hand basin, half empty shampoo bottles everywhere and the towels in a wet heap on the floor. I went back to reception and they were very apologetic and instantly and without question upgraded me into another room. The new room was a double, good size and clean. The decor is in keeping with a period property, but the rooms themselves both seemed reasonably well insulated for noise and warmth. Then I went to the restaurant for dinner. After waiting for a bit, then walking through the entire restaurant and back again I found were the staff were hanging out and was seated. The prices are relatively high for what the meal entails. I was given a roll which seemed only part baked and was warm and stodgy. I skipped the starter as I didn't fancy anything on the limited menu and for the main went for the sirloin, the steak was very nicely cooked and a good cut but the accompanying house chips tasted horrible with a really nasty texture and the mushroom was dripping in grease and just wasn't pleasant. Throughout my meal the staff were not attentive at all, nobody asked how it was or if I wanted anything else. Eventually a while after I had finished someone came and took the plate and left a dessert menu. I ordered a latte and then waited 25 minutes for it to arrive, and it really wasn't that great. Back in the room, and the bed was very comfortable with plenty of spare pillows and blankets available and I had a very good, comfortable nights sleep. After the previous evening I went back to the restaurant in hope but breakfast was an even bigger disappointment. The table was dirty and covered in bits of food, none of the cutlery was clean, the milk looked stagnant and had bits floating in it and the cups felt greasy. In fairness the scrambled egg was very nice but everything else was overcooked - the bacon snapped when I tried to cut it. When I checked out again the front of house staff were friendly and polite. I think I will stay here again but will eat elsewhere. The hotel isn't really near anything but Halifax is only about 10 minutes away with nice restaurants. So, in conclusion hotel good, restaurant very, very bad. I have based my scoring on the hotel only.

Dear Guest, thank you for taking the time to write your review. We're very disappointed in the unacceptable level of quality and service and I assure you we are looking into the details carefully as to where and why the experience was not up to our usual standards. Our general manager Shane Williams will be in touch direct to address the points raised and discuss a return visit.

“Welcome Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

Stayed here for 3 nights in January on a business trip. I had booked a single room but was given a fab room with a large half tester bed. The rest of the room was very clean with all the usual facilities. I always worry about noise in older properties having been kept awake by snoring or televisions etc on lots of occasions but I didn't hear a peep my whole stay not even the very creaky floorboards in the hall outside the rooms.

I only had dinner once but it was a very good experience, The waiter was very helpful pulling a table and chair closer to the lovely roaring fire for me in the wood panelled bar area as I didn't want to sit in the restaurant on my own he also offered to ask the chef to make something different from the menu. The food arrived quickly, was very well presented and tasted delicious,

I didn't get much chance to explore the area or the grounds due to the terrible weather but what I did see looked beautiful and well kept.

Will definitely be coming back for a social trip.

I have been to this hotel a couple of times now for weddings. Given the honour this hotel has around the town I always expect better than it actually is. Its okay, but nothing outstanding. Food is fine, but again nothing different from anywhere else. Surroundings are lovely. Not stay overnight as I live locally and have never eaten as a private individual in the restaurant due to the meals I have had whilst as a guest of a wedding party. Cant think of anything else other than its okay
