Interesting place, I can see why its a popular wedding venue as the building itself is full of character. The reception girls were very friendly and welcoming, polite and gave me a nice complimentary glass of mulled wine. Not sure if this was left over from Christmas but it tasted nice and was a nice warming touch on a cold, wet January night. I was checked in very quickly with the key to Room 13, single room. The room itself was clean and well presented but housekeeping had completely missed the bathroom, with half a cup of tea in the wash hand basin, half empty shampoo bottles everywhere and the towels in a wet heap on the floor. I went back to reception and they were very apologetic and instantly and without question upgraded me into another room. The new room was a double, good size and clean. The decor is in keeping with a period property, but the rooms themselves both seemed reasonably well insulated for noise and warmth. Then I went to the restaurant for dinner. After waiting for a bit, then walking through the entire restaurant and back again I found were the staff were hanging out and was seated. The prices are relatively high for what the meal entails. I was given a roll which seemed only part baked and was warm and stodgy. I skipped the starter as I didn't fancy anything on the limited menu and for the main went for the sirloin, the steak was very nicely cooked and a good cut but the accompanying house chips tasted horrible with a really nasty texture and the mushroom was dripping in grease and just wasn't pleasant. Throughout my meal the staff were not attentive at all, nobody asked how it was or if I wanted anything else. Eventually a while after I had finished someone came and took the plate and left a dessert menu. I ordered a latte and then waited 25 minutes for it to arrive, and it really wasn't that great. Back in the room, and the bed was very comfortable with plenty of spare pillows and blankets available and I had a very good, comfortable nights sleep. After the previous evening I went back to the restaurant in hope but breakfast was an even bigger disappointment. The table was dirty and covered in bits of food, none of the cutlery was clean, the milk looked stagnant and had bits floating in it and the cups felt greasy. In fairness the scrambled egg was very nice but everything else was overcooked - the bacon snapped when I tried to cut it. When I checked out again the front of house staff were friendly and polite. I think I will stay here again but will eat elsewhere. The hotel isn't really near anything but Halifax is only about 10 minutes away with nice restaurants. So, in conclusion hotel good, restaurant very, very bad. I have based my scoring on the hotel only.
