The hotel has recently been refurbished and was pleasant enough. The rooms are on a par with most Travelodges. However, the room pricing seemed more suited to a cheap B&B and most of the other occupants that we saw appeared to be contractors working in the local area.
The pub is mostly given over to seating for meals, and the prices seem relatively high. We didn't eat here in the evening, but the menu seemed varied and of good quality. We had a continental breakfast at £5.75 each - a cooked breakfast was available at £7.50. Hence, I was puzzled - if the rooms are still aimed at the cheaper end of the market, despite being refurbished to a good quality, why is the restaurant apparently aimed so much more up-market?
The hotel seems to have an identity crisis - I suspect the refurbishment was intended to take the hotel upmarket in line with the aspirations of the restaurant, but the management haven't been willing to risk lower occupancy rates whilst the new positioning gets established?
As a stopover whilst on business or leisure, the quality of the rooms versus the price makes this a good choice. However, I would hesitate to recommend it as a family destination.
The separation of the accommodation block from the pub/restaurant/reception could be a pain in bad weather.
When we came to check-in the desk was unmanned. There is a 'phone with the request to 'dial 0 for assistance'. However, another guest had already been waiting on the 'phone for several minutes waiting for a response. When someone did finally arrive, the check-in process seemed a little disorganised. That said, service in the bar and restaurant was excellent.
