“Old and cold!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

I felt very cold throughout this hotel and there was a very damp smell everywhere.
The room was large and clean, just very cold!
Being a vegetarian there was very little on the menus to suit me so we ate in the restaurant at the Windlestrae, which was excellent, and warm!
Breakfast was just ok, once again very little hot food for vegetarians.

Stayed here on a 2 night DBB deal, with a bottle of wine. Rooms were clean, comfortable and very spacious. We ate in both Jock's Bar and Basils, both meals were excellent. The staff were really friendly and extremely helpful. If you're looking for a quiet weekend away, this is a good place to go!

“Excellent and spacious”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

Maybe more for the passing traveller, the Green Hotel offers spacious rooms with all the facilities that one hopes for. The food is excellent for the price at Basil's restaurant in the hotel and there are gym and pool facilities at the sister hotel the Windlestrae up the road. there is a pleasant quadrangle to walk in or look at.
the staff are very friendly and as said in another post, and always eager to help.
The bathroom was good but could do with a shaving mirror for this of us who are bleary eyed in the morning. the bed was a bit hard for me.
Yes, it is not luxurious 5 star but it is more than adequate and is a regular stop for me.
Worth consideration - there are many things to do in the area and it would be a good base to explore the area. Well recommended.

Room Tip: rooms 39-43 are the best this is Scotland so don't expect Benidorm weather (B Connolly)!

“Faultless”

My husband and I stayed at this hotel on Saturday 7th January with my elderly parents. We had a one night DBB with bottle of wine. We arrived about 1pm and as check in was'nt until 2pm we had lunch in Jocks bar. The food was good and the staff friendly. We were checked in by a lovely young man called Ronnie and were given rooms 3&4. Both rooms were on the ground floor and were spacious, clean and comfortable and our wine was being chilled in an ice bucket. We used the pool in the sister hotel across the road and the staff in this hotel were also very friendly.Dinner was booked for 6.30 and I can honestly say that the dining experience only enhanced the lovely day we were already having. The food was absolutely delicious and of a very high standard.Compliments to the chef! The restaurant manager Sheila and her staff were an absolute joy.Breakfast was also excellent with plenty of choice. We all had a lovely stay and I can honestly say from the minute we arrived till we left every member of staff we came across was friendly, helpful and extremely professional, customer service is high on this hotels priorities. We will definately return.

Room Tip: Rooms 3 and 4 were large and comfortable.

“2 star hotel, 4 star food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

We were bought a 1 night DBB and bottle of wine deal for the Green Hotel as a wedding gift.

On arrival we were quite disappointed to find the hotel in the middle of the town, despite the boasts about land and gardens, suggesting this as a countryside hotel. The photographs on the website are very strategic in terms of what they show.

We asked if their was any upgrade available, and as a 'special deal' being 2 days after our wedding they offered a 4 poster bedroom for an extra £30 instead of £50, which we took. The room itself was very dated, with a few cobwebs, and a cleaner working in the bathroom when we arrived. The hotel corridors are very dated and cheap looking, looks like it would benefit from a makeover. One very noticeable thing was the creaky floorboards right through the hotel.

We went to the leisure spa in the Greens Hotels sister hotel over the road which was weird. We had to go out, cross a main road and walk a few hundred yards in the heavy rain to have a swim. Not exactly a relaxing experience.

On return to our room we had a bottle of champagne in a bucket with around an inch of tepid water in the bottom, and a bottle of lukewarm white wine. When I enquired at reception we were informed that the champagne was a gift from the person who booked the room, and the wine was part of the deal. They were put in the original room at 12:00 but when we upgraded they had to move it to the upgraded room when we were at the pool. They neglected to chill it or provide ice so i had to swap the bottle at the bar. We asked to take the white wine to dinner and were told no, it was hotel policy. On asking for further explanation I spoke to the restaurant manager who simply said 'hotel policy'. Pushing it further the Food and Beverage manager was sent to our room. He explained that they don't make money on the deals they sell online so I was required to buy a bottle from the restaurant wine list. When I refused he relented and agreed we could take the wine to dinner.......a very bizarre rule.

The food itself was absolutely faultless in Basils restaurant, just superb. We both enjoyed the meal which helped with the whole experience.

Overall very dated and poor hotel, only uplifted by the quality of the food. An absolute joke to advertise as a 4 star resort.

Won't be back!
