We were bought a 1 night DBB and bottle of wine deal for the Green Hotel as a wedding gift.
On arrival we were quite disappointed to find the hotel in the middle of the town, despite the boasts about land and gardens, suggesting this as a countryside hotel. The photographs on the website are very strategic in terms of what they show.
We asked if their was any upgrade available, and as a 'special deal' being 2 days after our wedding they offered a 4 poster bedroom for an extra £30 instead of £50, which we took. The room itself was very dated, with a few cobwebs, and a cleaner working in the bathroom when we arrived. The hotel corridors are very dated and cheap looking, looks like it would benefit from a makeover. One very noticeable thing was the creaky floorboards right through the hotel.
We went to the leisure spa in the Greens Hotels sister hotel over the road which was weird. We had to go out, cross a main road and walk a few hundred yards in the heavy rain to have a swim. Not exactly a relaxing experience.
On return to our room we had a bottle of champagne in a bucket with around an inch of tepid water in the bottom, and a bottle of lukewarm white wine. When I enquired at reception we were informed that the champagne was a gift from the person who booked the room, and the wine was part of the deal. They were put in the original room at 12:00 but when we upgraded they had to move it to the upgraded room when we were at the pool. They neglected to chill it or provide ice so i had to swap the bottle at the bar. We asked to take the white wine to dinner and were told no, it was hotel policy. On asking for further explanation I spoke to the restaurant manager who simply said 'hotel policy'. Pushing it further the Food and Beverage manager was sent to our room. He explained that they don't make money on the deals they sell online so I was required to buy a bottle from the restaurant wine list. When I refused he relented and agreed we could take the wine to dinner.......a very bizarre rule.
The food itself was absolutely faultless in Basils restaurant, just superb. We both enjoyed the meal which helped with the whole experience.
Overall very dated and poor hotel, only uplifted by the quality of the food. An absolute joke to advertise as a 4 star resort.
Won't be back!
