“Give it a miss”

I have stayed at this hotel twice within the last month. To say it does not deserve its 3 stars is an understatment I would barely award it 1! The staff there can not be faulted. The service amazing. However, the staff are overworked and this sometimes shows. Talking to one of the waiters I was amazed to find out that they work 15 hours some days then a further 4-5 in the hotels nightclub then expected to be back up at 7am to do a breakfast shift the following day. The 1st time I stayed I was met by a rather inexperienced group with the longest serving staff member being there just 2-3 months and the newest 2 days. The 2nd time I visited I was met by the same staff minus 1 or 2 and the standards were unbelievable, the pride they took and the level of politeness was brilliant. The amount they progressed was amazing. However, 2 of this group had been sacked during my stay, after talking to locals I was told it was because the management did not like them, if this is the way managment work here god help the guests if they had a complaint. Over all the hotel needs serious updating, carpet held together with tape on the stairs, leaks in the dining rom and on the stairs, the decor I was even told the roof had collapsed in 1 of the rooms due to not being fixed previously. I will not be staying here again but at the Alder Lodge guest house where my collegue stayed, they culd not fault the service or standards there.

Room Tip: Dont stay here at all. if you must stay ask for a room away from the nightclub!

This is a place where you should never go to if you want a meal or drink in lerwick went there last week with friends while in the area,

We waited for around 15 minutes to be served i was met by a dark haired rather buxom girl who was more interested in playing with her phone than giving me a drink she served me quickly only to run off and play with beer mats in the adjoiing bar with friends then totally diasapeared altogether for a further 20 minutes I could have drunk the bar dry in that time by that time we decided to go to oslas instead.

“The Not So Grand Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

This hotel is, so I'm totld by the locals, the poor tired sister of the Queens Hotel which is owned by the same group KGQ Ltd.
On arrival you enter, which would have been in its earlier days very elaborate, but today is a large bland area with a staircase leading up what one would call a 'compact' reception area on the first floor. The stair carpet did not give a good first impression being thread bare on the treads and, in places, areas held together with black gaffer tape.
On arrival at the reception you have to telephone for a receptionist who, on arrival, was very efficient and pleasant.
My room, a double for single occupancy (£102.50p a night), was clean and pleasant with the usual facilities. and I could not fault the daily make up of the room.
The hotel has an elegant dining room which unfortunately was not in use during the week I stayed. Evening meals had to be taken in the lounge bar, missing out on the views across the harbour.
Food wise the meals were OK and on the large size, so you won't go hungary. Once ordered the barman then rushed off to the kitchens with the meal arriving with a speed that I wondered how the chef managed to produce the food in such a short time. I would think that most meals were ready prepared and then either pressure steamed or microwaved as required.
Overall I found the hotel, as I said earlier, rather tired looking and was certainly under staffed. The staff seem to double up. Talking to one of the staff it seems that they have trouble getting people to work the hours required.
Would I stay again? - I think I'll try the Queens next time

“Dreary”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

No part of the hotel is level with famous stone slabs of wind-sheltered Commercial Street and a spooky entrance leads to a double flight of stairs covered with a very worn carpet. The small staff double up on their various tasks, but appear when summoned. High ceilings and dreary wallpaper add to the depressing ambience, and strange Bar can avoided. The breakfast emerges in bits, with a struggle. Sadly, Shetland kippers were off the menu that day. The harbour can be seen, just, from the alcove in the Breakfast Room. This is not a touristy town, and hence perhaps times are hard, apart from the spin-off from the off-shore oil industry . Perhaps cash is not available for a make-over, or perhaps it is - the hotel is part of a diverse local group holding. Anyway, stay somewhere else.
