“Queens Hotel Lerwick-weekend stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2010

Our triple room and bathroom were excellent apart from one problem which needs fixed which is the slow rate of hot water from the shower and to fill the bath (20 mins) but the room and bathroom were otherwise the standard of a 4* hotel and the Queens is a 3* i.e. large bedroom and bathroom and well decorated. Our room was on the top floor and as there were no lifts in the very old building we had to carry the two 20 Kgs suitcases up several flights of stairs to the top floor(4th) which was not a problem for us but would have been perhaps for others with heavier suitcases. The room had a small flat screen LCD TV which had an excellent clear picture but not great sound- somewhat "tinny". We had great views from the bedroom windows of the harbour area as the hotel is in the small town centre - right on the harbour side.

The small reception/entrance to the hotel had a strong musty smell which shows it needs redecorated as does the restaurant. There was a 1 foot square patch of peeling wallpaper on one of the landings near the staircase which also needs repairing.

However the two breakfasts we had were very good and the freshly cooked to order. We did not eat at night in the hotel and so cannot say what the main restaurant is like at night for an evening meal. The public bar was fine where we had a couple of drinks on the saturday lunchtime before the wedding we were attending.

Overall we were quite pleased as the hotel was better than we expected in a small town and considering it is in a very old building at least 100 years old with 2-3 feet thick stone walls.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2010

Most of my reviews average four star, ocasionally three or five, but rarely two. But the Queen's was disappointing. Starting with a positive, the location is excellent - right at the end of the main shopping street and near the harbour overlooking the island of Bressay. As first impressons go, however, the entrance area is musty and has a damp smell. The rooms were clean and comfortable, adequate for sleeping, a little compact, with TV and a good spacious bathroom. The food can be relied on to be of a high standard. Service from the reception was good, but the restaurant was mixed. A major flaw of the hotel is having no lounge - just a bar withTV and a few tables and stools. On asking to have just drinks in the restaurant, we were seated - only to be evicted to the bar 10 minutes later. The sleep quality was poor. Some rooms are located near a small beach area which attracted rowdy youths on one night. The next night, a guest made so much noise (and was not confronted by staff) that it was another sleepless night and, sadly, quite frightening. The manager was approached at the end of the stay and apologies and compenstation were given.

“Excellent Restaurant!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2010

I cannot comment on the hotel's acommodation as I did not stay there. My partner and I went to the hotel for food twice in one weekend. Lots of local produce on the menu, the freshest fish and lovely game. I had a crab cake which was sumptuous followed by guinea fowl on haggis mash which was cooked to perfection. My partner had scallops for a starter and beer battered haddock and chips. I know the latter might not sound exciting but I have never tasted fresher fish. There were several other items on the menu I would have liked to try.

On our second visit I had the cullen skink and my other half had mussels both of which were lovely. I then had the haddock (breaded this time) and my partner had shark. Again both dishes were tasty and very fresh.

The decor is somewhat dated but other than that I could not fault the restaurant!

“Don't bother with the restaurant”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2010

We had a meal in the Hotel with a small group and it was old fashioned, drab and very ordinary. I would not recommend it, there are better places to eat, and not as expensive.

“If you can avoid staying here, do”

The hotel is fortunate that it has a near monopoly, although it is in an ideal location, the restaurant service was abismal, the mainly untrained staff require management training and need to learn som basic manners, the whole appearance of the hotel is shabby and requires some updating, don't bother complaining to the so called manager, he does not reply anyway.
We also stayed at the sister hotel THe Grand, a most inapproriate name, overpriced and shabby also, value for money it certainly is NOT.
If there were a rating of zero, I would tick it.
