“Hotel a bit tired but functional”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

I was at this hotel in October on business. First impressions were not fantastic as the exterior of the hotel is not too inviting.

On entering the main reception and bar area you could instantly tell that the hotel was tired and in need of a major overhall, the windows in bar area were covered in condensation and dirty so dirty on the outside that it was a struggle to see out of them onto the view...... of the industrial dock side of Lerwick. The leather seats in lounge were tired and could again do with upgrading.

The room was clean but again the decor was in a bit of a time warp and could do with upgrading (as per my taste). There was a flat screen tv and tea coffee making facilities in room.

The room was clean and cleaned to a good standard every day.

Bed was a bit soft.

The bathroom looked as if it has recenty been refurbished so hopefully this is a sign of things to come for the rooms and public area, one of my colleagues stayed in a room on upper floor and said his room looked as if it had been updated recently throughout.

The food..... we all found to be very good. We all ordered steaks on the first night and despite some of the negative reviews found the food to be of pretty good quality. I had the ribs which were lovely and meaty but a bit disappointed with the BBQ sauce which lacked taste. The steak following on was cooked to perfection (for all in our party). We enjoyed it so much that we all ate in hotel on our second night stay.

The hotel is situated a 10 min walk from centre of town.

Would I stay again... wasnt put off but would like to see it modernised inside (not a lot can be done with outside).

Breakfast was very good also.

Service was good throughout stay.

“room stank of smoke”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

I only stayed here for one night - checked in during the evening, took my key and opened the door to a room that reeked of smoke. Both the bedroom and the bathroom absolutely stunk; I couldn't have slept there and any clothes left hanging in the open wardrobe would have been unwearable. Back to reception to ask for another room. After waiting in reception while the two receptionists tried to find out if another room was available, I was asked to go back to my room and they would phone if they could find one. Back to the smoke hole. I was then called and told that there was another room and I could come to reception to pick up the key "if I wanted". Again back to reception. No apology, no offer to bring the key to me or help me in any way to move rooms.

The second room was okay - reasonable size, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer. The pillows were very thin though and the bathroom tap was loose. Oh, and just as I was settling down to sleep the radio alarm came on at midnight!

In fairness, when checking out the young woman on reception (who was not there the previous evening) did seem concerned that my stay had been less than satisfactory. I also accept that there is little hotels can do when guests insist on smoking in rooms (I can only surmise that the inconsiderate pig who previously occupied room 325 lives in a stinking hovel), but clearly nothing had been done to try to rid the room of the stink and the customer service was not great.

In summary, my one night stay was pretty poor, but could have been acceptable if not marred by the first room.

Thank you for your feedback; the hotel is completely non smoking, and it is always a pity when a guest doesnt honour this. When you drew this to the attention of reception, the short delay simply refected the hotel was full, and a check was needed to see which rooms had been already allocated, and which might be available still. Once it was established there was a room available, it was made available; as you will have seen it was spacious with all expected accutrements, and a new bathroom.
I am sorry if you felt that short period was longer than you thought neccessary, but clearly reception wished to ensure that, having received a room you were unhappy with, this would not happen again.

“Timewarp but functional. 1st impression not good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2011

When visiting Shetland the hotel is something right out of 1970, concrete prefab. however inside the rooms are of a similiar standard as you would find in a Premier Inn. The bathroom has been recently updated. The rest of the decor is dark, giving it an overcast view throughout.
The food was of an adaquate standard, however for the price a little expensive, unfortunatley this seems to be the norm on Shetland.

“Excellent Hotel”

We stayed in this hotel for two nights. Had a great room facing the Ferry terminal, and the bed was very comfortable. Although we did not have dinner in the hotel, the two breakfasts we had were excellent. The food was cooked to order and was excellent, along with a good selection of juices cereals etc.
