“Gracious Hosts and wonderful Breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

I stayed here 2 nights with 3 other family members in June of 2011. Malcolm was a wonderful host..so friendly and accommodating giving us suggestions for places to eat supper etc.( I highly recommend the Kirkwall Hotel!!) we spent our first night at Eastbank House on our way to Westray and stayed again upon our return. Again Malcolm went out of his way to make us feel welcome and even gave us individual rooms which was such a pleasant surprise( previously we shared 2 rooms which were more than adequate) the breakfasts were made to order and the fresh fruit was great but one of the nicest things was finding Malcolm had peanut butter for the toast, something we didn't see in any other accommodation during our UK trip. In the morning our taxi arrived and it was discovered it had a fuel leak after our luggage was loaded up so Malcolm and the cook( sorry I can't remember his name) promptly took our luggage out of the taxi and put it in there own vehicle and took us to the airport!! Now that was above and beyond!! I WILL be staying there again on our return trip to Orkney!!

“The Place to stay in Kirkwall”

We were looking for some dog friendly accomodation in Kirkwall, which was gonna be our base for a few days while visiting the island. We stayed for 5 nights during school half-term at the end of October and I have to say that one of the very best places a been to. Breakfast by Stewart was everyday outstanding. And it wasn't just the food that made breakfasts so good, it was the company of both Malcolm the owner and Stewart. Fantastic guys, friendly and kind. Malcolm is a genuine person, his generosity and kindness is out of this world. We felt like home the whole time and are looking foward to going back one day. Thanks a lot. This place made our honeymoon a very special time. I highly reccommend it to everyone any time of the year.

“Great staff, great food”

When I first read the reviews for Eastbank House, I was sceptical. They seem to be one extreme or the other. But, the price was right, and I thought it was close to the ferry terminal (it isn’t, but that was my own misunderstanding about where the ferry comes in, not anything to do with Eastbank House).

I decided to take a chance on Malcolm and his guest house -- I am so very glad I did. Yes, the building is run-down, but the room was clean, which is a necessity in my book. All the important areas: the sheets, the bathroom, the dining area -- they were all very clean, and ready for guests. The decor is "global traveller", from Malcolm's travel, I would guess. He has been around the world a time or two, and it shows in his flexibility to serve guests familiar comforts, in addition to opening their horizons as to how Orcadians eat. I am specifically thinking of breakfast when he served us cheese he originally bought for a German guest. The cheese was Orkney cheeses, both similar and yet different from what the German guest would have eaten at home.

Malcolm was, as many others have said, friendly, hospitable, and eager to take care of the guests. The breakfasts were superb -- the best I have eaten in Scotland. Thank you to Stewart, the morning cook! The haddock, the salmon, and -- if you’re lucky enough -- the lobster are all fresh Orkney seafood. Sometimes it is so fresh that it only came out of the ocean a couple hours before landing on your plate.

If you are looking for all the luxuries and extras of five-star accommodation, Eastbank House isn’t the place for you. If, on the other hand, you want quirky, inexpensive, and affable hosts, then give Eastbank, Malcolm, and Stewart a chance.

“We had a great time and plan to go back”

We stayed 3 nights at the end of July. Malcolm the host was very friendly and obliging. Breakfasts cooked by Stewart were fantastic, I recommend the haddock. Contrary to other reviews the kitchen was spotless and tidy. Ok so not 5 star but I don't mind if the the bedlinen isn't "designer" it was all clean and ironed and the washing machines were on constantly. We chose to stay here as they allowed us to bring our dogs. We plan to go back so we can get to visit the other islands and will certainly make this place our base.
