When we arrived there was no-one there to greet us except for a dog in the dining area. we tried to call the Manager but got no response, the bell on reception did not work either so we went away and came back an hour later - still no-one to meet us. The reception area was foisty and smelled of dog, the sofa area had dog hair all over it. There was a youth hostel feel to the place. We eventually got through to the Manager on his phone who told us our room was open with the key in the door. The bed was big and the room was tidy enough but the wash / shower area left a lot to be desired. The complimentary biscuits were 2 months out of date. The breakfast was nothing special and it took at least half a dozen times of asking to finally get a coffee. The Manager was pleasant enough, if however, slighty taking too much on and getting orders wrong. Thankfully, we were only there for one night and that was only because we tried to book somewhere last minute and this was the only place available....and now we know why. We won't be back. Sorry.

Landlord blind drunk/empty wine bottles strewn across the office
Rooms were dirty, shabby and the sheets smelled terrible
toilet button broken
mirror was dirty
no handle on bathroom door
shower was either too hot or too coldwindows were dirty/window blinds had mould on them
room 14 had gaps in the window so people in hallway could see in
breakfast was okay but staff could be heard swearing in the kitchen
Obviously this place is too much for the owner to run himself. Needs money and TLC getting this place to a decent standard. Until then....avoid it.
Some fantastic other B&B's in Kirkwall as we later found it.................

We still don't know how we managed to book ourselves into such a horrible place! The room we were given was not the one booked. It was like staying in a squat. We only stayed one night of our four and went elsewhere. The matress was lots smaller than the bed. The bedding was mismatched and the valance was grubby. Curtains were thread bear, we had an internal window where the curtain was held up with drawing pins. The paintwork was all chipped and there were marks on the wall. The carpet was dirty. The 'wet room' was a joke. We thought breakfast may be the redeeming feature, but it was greasy and my partners sausage wasn't cooked through. The owner was a friendly guy, but he told us the same things it seems he said in 2008, ie, he's doing the place up. He said it had been a busy season and places are bound to get hammered, no where else we stayed in the two weeks we were away looked like this!! Don't stay here!!!!

.. find another place to sleep!!!! It was horrible!
