“clean, confortable but dissappointed with owners manner”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 May 2010

we stayed here one night,it was clean ,comfortable and quiet, tea and coffee provided but only enough for two cups for our overnight stay.Breakfast was uninspired but she did provide us with a soem tinned friut salad and cereal as we were up earlier than her to catch the ferry. The experience that marred our visit was my leaving a pair of expensive glasses in a case in the room, despite having our details the proprietor made no effort to contact me to return them and cheerly explained she had binned them after keeping them for approx three weeks.I feel this was unfrortunately an act that illustrated a lack of goodwill towards her customers..

“Excellent value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2009

We booked Polrudden for 6 nights as a base to explore Orkney and paid 60GBP per room per night B&B.

The guest house is fairly large and the right balance of friendly helpfulness with a personal touch and anonymity! Linda, the proprietor was really flexible as we arrived late in the evening and also went back there for a night after our trip to Shetland. It was no trouble to leave our car in the carpark for a few days and the fact we didn't arrive back from Shetland til midnight was not a problem.

The rooms are a decent size, light, modern and spotlessly clean. The breakfast was at a time to suit us, with an excellent selection of cooked, cereals, muesli, yogurts and fresh fruit salad, which we loved!!

Polrudden Guest House is a very pleasant 5-10 minute walk along the shore to Kirkwall town centre and really was ideal for exploring Orkney and great value. We will be back....

“A fitting end to our honeymoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2007

Having spent honeymoon in London and Paris we were looking for something or somewhere different to finish it off and this was perfect.

We left Inverness at 0700hrs and travelled to John O'Groats by bus, then took the passenger ferry over to Orkney then on to Kirkwall through some spectacular scenery.

Polrudden Guest House is a wee walk (7 mins) from the centre of Kirkwall but well worth it. The landlady was very welcoming and the room was decorated beautifully with en-suite facilities. The breakfast the following morning was hearty and more than set us up for our tour round the island, by bus. When drive yourself when you can be driven?

I would tell anyone going to Kirkwall to stay here!! And to take the bus tour round the island, you really see so much more. Skarra Brae, Scappa Flow, Churchill Barriers, Standing Stones, and The Italian Chapel. The bus driver gives a running comentary on the trip which is great, but it must get boring for the locals as this is a service bus.

We visited Highland Park Distrillery but they were going through their 'quiet' period so there wans't much happening but they still charged full price = which I thought was a bit much (being Scottish I expect value for money, and this wasn't really!) But still interesting enough.

Preferred the Heineken Brewery in Amsterdam. Now that really was value for money.

“Excellent Stay at Polrudden”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2007

I stayed at Polrudden for three nights in April and it was a great experience.

The location is excellent, a short walk from the city centre, but away from any noise. Very peaceful grounds and pleasant garden.

To greet you outside (along with Linda) was a very sweet cream retriever and an equally sweet black kitty! A plus for any traveller missing their own pets. For those with pet allergies, these animals do not enter the guest part of the house, so you have no worries there.

The room sizes were good and the en-suite baths as well. Tea-making and television in the rooms, with access to the internet in the guest lounge. Views from the front are across the water to the ton and from the back, across the garden to a pastured hill.

Breakfast was plentiful and served by Linda with a smile!

All in all an excellent option to a hotel stay and I would hightly recommend Polrudden for anyone wanting clean, friendly and quiet accommodation in Kirkwall!

  • Liked — The peaceful location.
  • Disliked — Unfortunately, I had a room with twin beds, but that was not the fault of the guest house.
