“It really is a Country House”

We visited Orkney and would be pressed to find a more comfortable hotel anywhere. We had one of the suites which were a fair size away from the main hotel. We were able to drive into a courtyard which was right by our front door. The restaurant was elegant and the food was well presented and good. We also ate in the bar, which was the local inn, the food was equally good, definitely better than your average pub grub and cheaper than the restaurant.

Room Tip: Suites have "French Windows" to lawn overlooking the loch, are ensuite and very comfortabl...

Dear jh_turner1
Thank you for your review, I am glad you enjoyed your stay even more so that you so enjoyed our new Garden Rooms, these rooms have proven very popular since being built in 2008, plenty of space, private car parking and furnished terrace overlooking the countryside/loch....
I have passed on your kind comments to the kitchen on how much you enjoyed your meals both in Skerries Restaurant and the Lounge Bar. We try to use as much Local Produce as possible as we have such fantastic options on our doorstep. Thank you again for taking the time to let us know how much you enjotyed your stay.

A couple (64/71) stayed for two nights. Very spacious and comfortable room. Delicious breakfast with plenty of choice. We enjoyed such a warm welcome at Merkister and even though the Restaurant was closed in October, the bar meals were very good. Wonderful loch views! Highly recommended.

Dear John P,
Thank you for your review, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Merkister. Out of Season we run as a Bed & Breakfast, however that means Extra Value Rates for the customer, we still have the same Kitchen, it’s only the restaurant that’s closed, and so we adapt the Bar Menu, offering everything from Fish & Chips, Steak Pie etc....right up to hand Dived Scallops and Speciality Aberdeen Angus Steaks. Suppers are served in our cosy Lounge Bar with Open Fire. Bed & Breakfast from £ 25pp...Full Breakfast Options are served in the Dining Room overlooking Harray Loch, or a Continental Breakfast Tray picked up the night before so you can take advantage of a Long Lie, the choice is yours....Thank you again for your kind words. We look forward to serving you again.
Best Regards

“loved it !!!”

First trip to Orkney and so gald I stayed at the Merkister. So friendly, nothing too much trouble and the views around the hotel are magical. The food was scrumptious - the puddings delicious. Lorna makes you feel very welcome as well as everyone else (even the cleaning staff!) I had a lovely relaxing time and found the bed in the suites comfortable and enjoyed having my own private veranda. The menu in the bar and restaurant changed daily and was often spoilt for choice.

If you want to be somewhere where you are made to feel like you matter then choose The Merkister.

“A magical fly fishing destination”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

I could hardly wait for mid August and my fourth stay at the Merkister. The talk on my arrival was that the fishing was difficult but that hardly seemed to matter. This is without doubt the friendliest hotel i have ever stayed at,we were greeted by Lorna and given the full tour of the facilities, nothing was too much trouble.Although the trout fishing is my main priority you could not choose a better venue just to relax in.The staff are very friendly and the food is absolutely wonderful. The fishing was a little harder than previous years but all the better for that and with John's expert help the week was a huge success. The boats and engines are kept pristine and reliable by Alan but he does need to work on his weather forecasting!I will definitely return.

Room Tip: If you need extra space the suites are excellent

Dear Guiness10,
4 Times! We must be doing something right......Yes we are very lucky to have guests that come back year after year, this year we had a couple celebrating their 25th at the Hotel, yes every year for 2 weeks, for the last 25 Years....they have been at Merkister. I am glad you enjoy your time at Merkister, all the staff work very hard to ensure that all our guests are looked after. I see you come to enjoy some of the excellent fishing Orkney has to offer, earlier this year Loch Harray held the Internationals, and it was a great success. John our resident Ghillie and Alan both work very hard at keeping the boats and engines in pristine condition, and John has been known to give a "killer" fly or two to our guests. We look forward to serving you again in the near future, and thank you again for your wonderful reviews and kind comments.
Best Regards

“Wonderful break at the Merkister”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

My husband and I recently stayed at the Merkister for five days The hotel was just as described on the hotel site and did not disappoint. The views from the hotel over Loch Harray are outstanding. It is spotless and all the staff are friendly and courteous and nothing was too much trouble. The food is good and you have the choice to eat in the restaurant, or the bar which is more informal, in the evening. There is plenty food to choose from where ever you eat. I have just read a review dated 15 Sept and the people who wrote it may have been there when we were. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I did not experience 'rules that govern table places' in the dining room. The diningroom has a side of it with large picture windows overlooking the loch. I can't remember exactly but possibly eight tables are at the windows with more tables away from the windows. You can see the view perfectly well at all the tables. I know this because we were seated at different parts of the dining room at various times. We also had a room in the annexe. The rooms there are large with wonderful views out of the french doors towards the loch. Our room had a wet room and unlike the last reviewer I do not think that this was installed to benefit the hotel and inconvenience the guest. Rather the wet rooms allow people with disabilities to stay at the hotel...and the hotel information states that the garden rooms have wet rooms. We had a wonderful time and I have no hesitation in recommending the Merkister.

Dear EdinburghSasha,
Thank you for such a great review. I think I remember you both, I certainly remember Sasha the dog... :) I am glad you enjoyed staying in one of our Superior Garden Rooms, they are very popular, they were purpose built in 2008, its nice when our guests say how much they enjoy being able to sit out on their own veranda watching the sunset, or indeed watch the sun come up.....That’s exactly what we had in mind when building them. Bright, Spacious Rooms with all the added Extras. We have a wonderful location and you are correct when you talk about the views, walks, surroundings, when you stay with us you get the best of both words, just a 15 minute drive to all the sites and the main towns of Kirkwall and Stromness, but the beauty of the countryside and all the different light changes in the summer, the wildlife and panoramic views.
Thank you for taking the time to post your review, and we look forward to serving you again.
