We stayed here on the way back from a holiday in Scotland, so the location is convenient for the motorway, but it's so close that it's too noisy to sleep with the window open (although even closed, there was a sound of traffic). However, that is only to be expected in an older hotel so close to a motorway.
First impressions were great - very friendly check in, lovely hall way. But then we were directed through a door to what looked like a service corridor, very narrow, and no carpets. Through the next door, the carpet was an unfortunate dull brown/beige tartan, and looked dirty (though it probably wasn't). Our hearts sank...but then, we opened the door to our lovely room. Very spacious, a four poster bed - what a suprise. Bathroom was immaculate, recently refurbished. The wall paper (new) behind the bed was a horrible, 1970s looking brown disco/night club pattern - but this is just my personal taste, and I didn't have to look at it!
We went straight for a meal, my partner's was lovely, but my salmon with stir fry veg was swimming in oil/butter. Service was excellent, and we were entertained by an impromptu 'domestic' by another couple.
The worst bit was when we tried to sleep. Although the room had been refurbished, I think the mattress must have been there since the hotel opened - it was horribly saggy, and I could feel every ridge. Very noisy banging of fire doors too. Not a good night's sleep.
Other minor quibbles: only one packet of biscuits on the welcome tray, it was impossible to fill the kettle from the tap in the sink - so we had to use the bath tap, there were no remote controls for either the TV in the room, nor in the 'library'.
All in all, I guess it was an ok stay, given the class of hotel - but we stayed in a far more superior place on the way up, for the same price.
