This is the second stay I've had at the Great Central Hotel and both times the hotel has been acceptable for the price. Staff fairly helpful and rooms are fairly comfortable and most have now been refurbished, however it is unfortunate that the refurbishment of the communal areas appears to have stalled (I was told in 2008 that the refurbishment of the main foyer and reception was 'imminent!') Service at breakfast can be a bit hit and miss though, plus the barman's excuse for not being able to call a taxi (because it's raining?!) I found a bit thin. However being that Loughborough is not really the place to go you don't really expect it to have great hotels. For budget business this hotel might be ok but I would not recommend for tourists unless you are there for the preserved railway as this hotel is right by the preserved railway station (and I think many of it's clients are volunteers at the railway, judging by the people in the bar!) So if you like to chat about steam trains, this is your place!
