I stayed at the Beauchief with my daughter as we were going to the same function as Cheshire Rose. Our experience was a the same mixed bag - the staff were lovely but the hotel is really tired and the general housekeeping and food organisation need some serious attention.
My daughter was charged £10 more than the quoted rate (I booked by phone), our room was really cold (breath condensing in the room and no heating at any time), one of the beds in our twin room was in the process of collapsing - my daughter had a broken spring in her mattress, the room wasn't particularly clean, we had no sound at all on the television and we had a broken furniture and a window taped together. Breakfast, having been moved from 7am to 9am to 8am - 10am, was problematic by the time we got down just after 9am (having had a phone call to tell me to hurry up from a friend!).
With 12 of us booked in, they'd run out of cooked food. In fairness, they did give us masses of toast and tea, but surely, even if it is more people than they expected, they could have got some more supplies in - possibly even have emergency stocks in a freezer. The bizarre thing is that, as a group, we regularly organise rallies and cook for in excess of 30 people in a narrowboat kitchen without difficulty. I do realise that only eight people pre-ordered breakfast but surely when someone asks if they can have breakfast then it's usual to consider whether you have enough food or can get some before saying yes?
Overall it was cheap and convenient but I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon.
