“great restaurant with rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2010

You stay here mainly for the fantastic restaurant and the ability to just climb the stairs after a great meal with probably too much wine. Like many of these type of places there are only a few rooms (4) all different and nothing like a standard corporate hotel (which is why we like to stay in them). We really enjoyed our time here. The reviews are accurate - its a 15th century listed building - so you expect creaks etc. It is clean but yes the carpets are stained and there are a few cracks in the plaster work. So if you enjoy a more contemporary imaculate feel to your hotels this will not be the right choice for you. However, if you love great food, like something different (shabby chic?) like us you might have a really fantastic night and stay here.

“Nice little getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2010

This is probably our 3rd or 4th visit and the quality has always been consistent. Obliging owners, comfortable rooms, and great food.
All staff very helpful and professional, rooms nicely furnished and comfortable, with each one of the 4 having its own character. Minor criticism is that they could perhaps all do with a little sprucing up. Restaurant is first rate with both dinner and breakfasts excellent. Location is good and there is parking too. For best value keep a look out for the Dinner, Bed & Breakfast offers - we paid £100 for B&B and Dinner which made a lovely little cheeky getaway from our children!

“Needs an Upgrade”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 March 2010

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night on the way to visiting friends. We stayed in the Sir Thomas Hardy room. Although the linen and bathroom were clean, the room was shabby and dated. The carpet had a number of stains, the paintwork was chipped and scuffed and the room was generally in need of redecoration. The bathroom was also dated and the loo didn't flush properly. We felt the hotel was generally overpriced for the level of accommodation on offer (we paid a discounted rate of £75 for the night). We were also woken at 2-30am by a delivery van (presumably for one of the shops or restaurants on the market square) which kept it's engine running for 20 minutes, which in turn kept us awake and ruined our nights sleep.

We did not eat in the restaurant so cant comment on the food. The breakfast the next morning was fine and there was a good choice on offer.

This hotel does have a car park to the rear and we suggest that if you are staying on a Friday or Tuesday evening that you use it ! We parked on the market square and my husband was most shocked when he went down to put money in the meter, the car at 9am on Saturday morning to find it was surrounded by market stalls.

“Just loved it.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2009

Stayed here the night before a family wedding. Lovely room. Very comfortable bed. Excellent breakfast. Freshly squeezed orange juice and great coffee! Would like to have sampled the restaurant menu, but had to join other wedding guests at the Normanton Park Hotel. Owner very helpful and we were able to park at the rear of the property. Woke to find a lovely market, outside my window, in the square, on Saturday morning. Had not heard any noise at all. Would stay here again. Rutland Water is a beautiful part of England. “Quaint property but needs a bit of an upgrade”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2009

We stayed at the Lord Nelson House (in the Thomas Hardy room) for 3 nights in August. This is a beautiful property and full of character but is showing some signs of wear and tear. However, cleanliness was not an issue and the quirkiness of the building (creaky floorboards and wonky walls) just added to the experience for us.
As our room overlooked the garden to the side of the property we had no issue with noise but with a market right outside twice a week and a newsagents next door I could see that the front facing rooms may be noisy.
Breakfast was truly fantastic, I can still taste the smoked salmon & scrambled eggs! We ate at the restaurant on one evening and again the food and service was fantastic. Many things on the menu were changed and this can only demonstrate that everything is fresh and cooked to order...big bonus.
All in all we had a great stay and will definitely recommend to others and stay again.
