I think this place must have gone downhill since the last review.
The Lord Nelson calls itself a restaurant with rooms - 4 in all.
I can see that it must have been a nice place once upon a time but it is great need of a revamp. I understand that it has recently changed hands so this might explain things.
We booked two rooms for a weekend with dinner on the first night. The rooms are quite quirky but they are poorly designed, not particularly clean and the beds are not comfortable - I doubt whether the matresses have been changed in years. The rooms need fresh paint, new bathrooms (our sink had a huge crack in it), new carpets and new beds. Most of all, they need to be cleaned by someone who can see the cobwebs!
To be fair, the restuarant was buzzing and looked very attractive. The food looked like it should have been great - the menu was very appealing and everything sounded delicious. But the food was completely over priced - £20 for a main - and just not worth the money - the food was only just ok. The waitress had really talked up my main course but when it came it was just an over cooked pasta dish.
At 3.30 in the morning we were awoken by external phone calls that should not have come through to our rooms which completely spoiled our night. Apparently an avoidable mistake. The owner offered us a small reduction in compensation but how do you price a ruined night's sleep?
Breakfast was ok but the service was very poor - full of mistakes and took over an hour. And we were the only guests there.
All in all, the Lord Nelson was a big disappointment. We paid too much money for a well below average stay. A great shame. Maybe the new owners can turn this place around.
