“Thoroughly recommended”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

Arrival late Sunday evening for a funeral the next day. Friendly and informative welcome. Spotlessly clean.

Two blokes, one probably looking fresh out of a "boot camp", the other looking like he ran it. We felt like part of the family when we left on the Tuesday morning.

Sharing Jenny and John's home very special and warm.

Smokers but a spotless "ashtray" - a washed tin can with label removed provided for outside use - lovely touch. The two of us shared the top floor suite. Beds so comfortable as to not wish to leave them. Room requirements requested. Service earnest, honest and totally inobtrusive.

Local taxi company very helpful indeed. Good pub with good food in Ross-on-Wye - The Man of Ross, near to St. Mary's Church. Excellent curry restaurant in nearby Monmouth. Very good coffee shop/newspapers/etc. 30 seconds to one minute walk from Portland House.

The Cross Keys pub perhaps three miles away recommended Portland House to us. Another great pub worth a visit.

Beautiful countyside. Very friendly locals.

Exceptional breakfast. Freshly cooked to order exactly as requested. Well done to all!!!

We have good friends who live in mansions within hundreds of acres of estate. We have good friends who live in council flats. We have eaten in the highest grade of restaurants and possibly the worst "greasy spoon". Stayed in the highest class of hotels.

Rather stay at Portland House.

Hope to return to Portland House in December 2011

Haven't mentioned wonderful Jess because everybody does - oops, just did!

“Very enjoyable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

The house is cosy and welcoming and we enjoyed our stay. We stayed in the Magnolia Room which was comfortable and tastefully decorated, The bathroom was a bit noisy but nothing we couldn't look beyond.

Jenny and John were great hosts and were very sweet to get the room ready early as I had nowhere to go whilst my husband indulged at a local wine auction! They were friendly and treated us as if they had known us for years.

Special mention has to go to Jenny's fabulous breakfasts. My husband had the cooked breakfast. The ingredients were of excellent quality, especially the bacon. I had the apple pancakes with warm honey. Both absolutely delicious.

If we ever find ourselves in the area again we will definitely stay here - although perhaps we will go for the Monmouth Suite as we had a peek into the room whilst it was being cleaned and it looked gorgeous!

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

We stayed at Portland House for one night in the Monmouth Suite which has a very comfortable four poster bed. The facilities in the room and on suite bathroom were excellent and very clean. John and Jenny were very welcoming and were very helpful when we asked about local activities and walks. Breakfast was delicious and there was a great variety of homemade jams each of which were sampled and enjoyed. We would recommend the Portland Guest house without hesitation.

“Don & Jean”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2011

We stayed at Portland House in September in the Marstow Room - very comfortable - lovely bed. Spotlessly clean throughout. Really enjoyed our stay and were made very welcome by John, Jenny, Jo and Jess! We have a special thankyou to Jess for making our stay especially enjoyable being dog lovers. We really looked forward to our breakfast times - not only for the excellent homemade food, jams and preserves, bread etc.etc., but for the entertainment provided by Jo! We hope to be able to visit again soon, its such a beautiful area with so much to see. Thanks also for the recommendation to visit Goodrich Castle with the excellent audio tour and to Cross Keys for the evening meals, although we found the portion sizes a little daunting! Helen did not seem to know the meaning of 'small' or 'medium' everything came in very generous portions. (Very tasty too!). Portland House is a lovely place to stay at a very reasonable price.

“Lovely hosts, great breakfasts, handy base for exploration”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

Very welcoming and friendly staff (and cute dog!). We stayed in the Magnolia Room which was an adequately sized room and fine for us as a couple-though we were only staying one night. Very comfy bed. Good service trays in room for a B&B. Lovely breakfast-homemade porridge was yummy, and the eggs Benedict was the best I've ever had! Great location for exploring the area as near to Symonds Yat, Goodrich etc. Thanks for the recommendation to have dinner at the Cross Keys at Goodrich-friendly country pub with nice food.
As for downsides, these were only minor quibbles which weren't hugely problematic to us as we were only there one night, but: being an old house they need to use special toilets due to the old pipework which is understandable. However these are noisy, and when the guests upstairs flushed their loos it sounded like a loud clap of thunder each time! Also if you're a light-sleeper like me you may want to bring earplugs (there's a bit of traffic noise, & we had an irritating kid running around the room above us!), and an eye-mask as the room's quite light. Only other qualm (NOT Portland House's fault) was that I booked online & originally Booking.com said 'Special offer-only one room left-£79', but when I went to pay it said £85. I paid it without quibble as this was a last-minute stay & I was struggling to find anywhere in the area.

It's much appreciated to receive this extensive and useful review. Thank you very much for the compliments and for taking the trouble to provide such a comprehensive impression of your short stay . It's good to know what pleases! The housekeeping staff are sorry that the traffic noise intruded on your comfort, in the Magnolia Room. There is secondary glazing which is extremely effective but neither it nor the original sash top window had been closed properly at changeover time that morning. Only 2 guest rooms in Portland House has a mascerator toilet.. These can be noisy if guests use them a lot, we recommenf that these toilets are left unflushed during the night from an enviromental point of view as much as anything. (And we're on a water meter!) I must defend my other little guest, she was immaculately behaved in the dining room. Albeit a tad excited because she was going to be a bridesmaid that weekend, and she just so loved the doll's house so much in the Ross Suite, above you, - she didn't want to go home! But if 'kids' aren't your 'bag' then I understand that too! Re the tariff - I'm baffled by that one because the Magnolia Room is always priced at £85 for a Saturday stay on Booking.Com. I can't explain where or why you gained the £79 tariff but can only apologise if felt misinformed.
