We stayed here only one night, just a stopover on a long journey by road. We had originally thought of staying at a travel lodge, but the prices were scarcely any cheaper so we decided to look for somewhere independent, and we were not disappointed!
We had emailed the hotel beforehand to say that we would be arriving close to midnight, and despite the lateness of our arrival, we were greeted personally by the hotel's owner.
In the dark it's a little easy to drive past the entrance, despite the fairly large sign on the gate, but in driving past you'll most likely notice that you have in fact just missed it! There are opportunities to turn round just a little further on.
The entrance hall has a fantastic collection of old books, a suit of armour and antique furniture; it was just a pity we had so little time to look at it.
Our room had been warmed up in advance of our arrival, which was particularly welcome since it was quite cold outside. The room itself was furnished in a quirky and old-fashioned style, but we both loved it, and it's thankfully a world away from a modern chain hotel.
Despite the fact that this hotel is not far from some major cities, it has the feel of being in the coutryside, and it was very quiet. That, together with the large and comfortable bed, meant we had an excellent night's sleep.
We had ordered a full breakfast for the morning, and once again, the attention to detail was there: it was all freshly prepared and cooked for us, and it was definitely on the large side.
The only possible thing I could mention which could have been better was that the shower was a bit weak, but that's really all.
So if you just need an overnight stop close to the M6 motorway (junction 11) or you need somewhere to stay for a bit longer in the area, you could scarcely find anywhere better.
