“Lovely stay - shame about the bed!”

The overnight break we had at the hotel was to celebrate our anniversary. The food in the restaurant was first rate, as was the service and the ambiance of the hotel. Unfortunately, the sleep quality in Room 37 was terrible. The mattress was very uncomfortable and the pillows were inadequate. You couldn't sleep in one position for too long before the pain caused you to move, which made the bed make a loud noise, which then woke the other one up! My husband ended up feeling ill in the morning, with aching shoulders, back and a severe headache. Not very romantic!

Room Tip: Avoid Room 37.

“Quirky, Comfortable, Good Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Went recently for a weekend break. Standard room as it was a last minute idea. The hotel has a lot of character, the room was comfortable with en suite bathroom and a view of the Pavilion Gardens. The floor sloped a bit but then the hotel does date back to the 1500's.

The award the hotel won for good breakfasts is well deserved. We had both breakfast both days, dinner one night in the restaurant and a pre-theatre meal in the bar. All the food was excellent.

It snowed heavily whilst we were there and the staff were very helpful in trying to find out the state of our road home.

All in all a very enjoyable visit.

“Comfort and history”

Situated in the picturesque centre of the town, the Old Hall Hotel is not a luxury hotel but has bags of history and character. It is opposite the Pavilion Gardens and close to the old spa baths (due for renovation) and Palace Theatre. We had a very comfortable and warm stay (the snow was coming down outside in The Square). Food in the restaurant is excellent quality and value for money, with some interesting dishes. Local beers are featured in the bars. Looking forward to a return visit.

“Quaint hotel, not for those who like modern boutique hotels”

Stayed for one night at the Old Hall in Buxton. I have to stay I am a fan of luxury modern hotels (with a spa is even better!), but this gem of a hotel really changed my mind.
It has a really lovely atmosphere, and the rooms are just great. I had a double room, which had lots of space. and my friend had a four poster bed, which was really great! The rooms were lovely and warm, which was perfect as it was -6 outside. The rooms were clean and had everything you needed. The only thing it did not have was an iron, so I called reception, and one was at my door within 2 minutes...I usually have to wait over an hour in the Hilton!
The one small complaint I have is that the bar at the back of the hotel was a little chilly. I had to keep my coat on, so finished my drink rather quickly!
Breakfast was great...a great selection. I had an enormous bowl of porridge, and my friend had what looked like a great 'full English'.
Would I stay here again...absolutely!
NB: Loved the little touches, like the teddy on your bed and the Buxton water in your room.

“Lovely piece of history”

We were offered the room 'Mary's Bower' for a special price (74 quid) as it was mid-winter and mid-week. This was a fantastic deal and we thoroughly enjoyed our night in this beautiful and historic room. The hotel itself is slightly tatty but not too bad, and overall very charming, and its location is as good as it gets for Buxton. One of our favourite memories of our 9 days in England. I'd definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Try to get Mary's Bower if you can - reportedly the room Mary Queen of Scot's was held in, c...
