“A wonderful warm welcome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Family wedding 15 minutes away led to us booking a one night stay at this wonderful 400 year old Inn. We were sorry we only had time for B+B. Breakfast was delicious and the Cromwell Suite was absolutely wonderful. A venue steeped in history. We can recommend this lovely place to stay in the heart of Hay on Wye, service was excellent, warm and friendly.

Room Tip: I didn't see the other rooms but if returning would definitely choose the Cromwell Suite again...

“Relaxing and Value for Money stay in atmospheric Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

Just back from a delightful weekend break at the Old Black Lion Inn at Hay-on-Wye with my wife and son. We had a twin room (Room 10) on the ground floor in a modern annexe just across from the Inn whereas my son had a single room (room 5) with its own private bathroom along the corridor in the old Inn-both very comfortable-Room 10 has been relatively recently re-furbished with a modern compact en-suite. The room was lovely and warm on arrival on a cold winter's afternoon (not always the case in much more expensive properties).
We eat at the Inn both evenings in the lovely atmospheric bar with its scrubbed pine tables and cosy ambience and absolutely NO musak! Food was excellent and professionally served-we had a celebratory dinner with my cousin and wife on the last evening and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, including my cousins wife who is a vegetarian. There are a range of draught beers available including Black Lion Ale.
Breakfast is served in a seperate dining room overlooking a patio and is freshly prepared and cooked to order including traditional english using good quality ingredients, and grilled Manx Kippers, with choice of cereals/porridge/muesli.
This Inn is under the direct supervision of the resident proprietor and it shows.
There is a private car park and its location adjacent to the fascinating second-hand bookshops and antique shops of Hay-on-Wye is ideal.
We have tried all the other options in Hay-on-Wye over a number of years and keep coming back to the Old Black Lion as represting good value for money combined with a lovely ambience and comfortable accommodation.

Room Tip: There are 4 rooms in the modern annexe and 6 in the old Inn-take your pick.

“Clean and Pleasant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011

This pub is situated on one side of Hay, but since it only takes 5 minutes to walk to the other side, it is in a very convenient location. There is an adjacent car park, which is almost essential in Hay, especially during busy periods. The owner and staff were very friendly and made us welcome. The pub and our bedroom were very clean and warm. The ensuite was basic but as expected. Although we had a roadside room (No 2), the roads were very quiet so there was no night time disturbance. This room is also above the bar area and alhough there is no sound proofing, the pleasant tone of the conversations below hardly disturbed us. And of course, there was silence when the pub closed. Breakfast here is a delight, with an excellent choice; the full English breakfast alone is worth a return visit.

“A nice old style pub in the town centre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011 via mobile

We booked this pub to stay in for a local festival event. At £90 for two including breakfast it fitted our bill. We didnt eat in the pub so I can't comment on that - but it's a great location and the pub is lively enough. Old world room with sloping floor, poor sound insulation, and a basic shower room - but comfy enough!

“November stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

Great place to stay in a fascinating town and beautiful area. Rooms comfortable and with extra blanket it enabled us to get the right degree of temperature control when sleeping. Staff really friendly, good range of excellent food and drink.
