“Lovely weekend get away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012 via mobile

We brought a group on deal for this hotel, so didn't really know what to expect. The hotel is a lovely family run hotel in a very quaint little village. Other than walking there is very little to do in the village, but it's only a 20 minute walk in to hay on Wye. The room was lovely quite recently decorated. The food was good and such good value because of the group on deal.

“Fantastic anniversary weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

We had 3 nights here at the end of January and the hotel actuallly exceeded our expectations. We were greeted warmly and the various do's and dont's clearly explained. The room was comfortable and warm despite the bitterly cold weather. Breakfast and other meals were of a high standard. What really makes this hotel special is the staff who were all warm, friendly and could not do enough to help you. We will definitely be paying another visit.

Room Tip: Room 2 has no adjacent rooms, pleasant outlook and is situated next to the comfortable lounge area.

The bar was nice with log fire but thats about the best thing I can say about it.
Outdated, shabby, and pretty sure the beds had bugs. We were itchy as soon as we got in the bed and were covered in tiny red bites all over for the next few days. There was a spider web over the kettle and damp patched on the wall. When anyone walked by or talked in the hallway it was as though they were actually in the room, the walls were so thin.
Owner is nice enough - just as long as you are not expecting hotel standards. Its possible we had one of the worse rooms as reviews do seem very mixed.

We find this guests comments extraordinary, malicious and quite slanderous.

Everything seemed fine on the first night, however, on the second, we were surprised that the female guest was not present for dinner. During morning check out, the gentleman was asked if everything was ok he said yes, it was fine, but his wife had been admitted to hospital the previous day with chest pains. The male guest then queried his breakfast bill, he disagreed with one of the charges; we apologise and removed the item. I wished him well and hoped is wife made a speedy recovery. He said he was picking her up and taking her back to a local hospital where they lived. I wished him well again he thanked me and left. Everything seemed very amicable.

Then this review.

Now for the 'bed bugs'; all our mattresses are steam cleaned on a regular basis. In this case, both single mattresses in the twin room were renewed in November last and were cleaned during our closed period in January.

It is also strange that the 15 people that have stayed in that particular room since Jan 5th this year, have not reported any problems with the room in the days immediately before....I suggest some kind of allergy be more likely. However, if anything is now on them, they were imported by the guests themselves, and as a safety measure we have discarded the mattress covers and taken that room out of service for re-cleaning. Oh, and we'll get rid of the cobweb on the kettle too.

We don't quite know how we offended this guest, or how any person can make such malicious, damaging and petty comments, but as we said, there was no mention of any issues made on checkout. If guests do not bring concerns to our attention we cannot do anything about them - if they exist that is.....

“Baskerville Arms, Clyro”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

The Baskerville Arms is an excellent hotel; well, not a hotel as such, as Dave the owner is at pains to point out, but an INN. Hotels, as Dave says, are centred on the rooms, an inn on the bar. (Don't let this distinction put you off, though -- our room had a jacuzzi!) And the bar does not let down; the staff and the locals are friendly and gregarious and the Baskerville also offers an excellent restaurant with a superb menu. The chef is French and the sophistication is reflected in the cuisine. Furthermore, the largesse of the Continental breakfast defies anyone to go away hungry. We overnighted on a trip from Ireland to Berkshire and will definitely be back. Can't say enough good about the Baskerville and of June and Dave who run it. One further note: if you request it, you can get a dog friendly room. Gotta love this place.

Room Tip: If you have any special requirements, just ask Dave or June; I'm sure they will provide.

Tom,

Thank you for the kind review and we are glad you enjoyed yourselves.

Its great for guests to take us as we are and not as they would like us to be. That distinction between an Inn and a hotel is quite important as many do not understand these fundamental differences.

It means that unless a property is purchased (or newly built) by a large hotel company and gets hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on it, yes some of the walls are thin; yes, there are functions in the bar that some take offence over; yes, the floorboards creek; and yes we are not hermetically sealed with identical furniture in every room as some chains have.

But the rooms are clean, different, recently decorated and functional and we do our best to make sure every guest gets the most from their stay.

Thanks again for allowing us to point out these issues, and next time you are passing I owe you a beer!

Dave

“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

stayed for 2 nights on a groupon voucher bed, breakfast and evening meal
everything was spot on
the hotel was warm, friendly and oozed atmosphere and charm
the owners and all of their staff were very accomodating and friendly
the food was second to none - the chef is excellent and i must say the £20 per person per night for food was quite acceptable
we had three courses each and was only around £2 each over our limit - excellent value for money
we were in bedroom 3 and it was lovely
so all in all 10 out of 10 and will definately be back there soon :)

Toby from Swansea,

Many thanks for the favourable review and we are glad you enjoyed yourselves despite the weather!

I'm glad you enjoyed the food in particular, as we pride ourselves on the standard of pub fayre that we serve. We are very lucky to have Joel (our French Chef) with us.

That menu spend limit with dinner included tariffs has come up several times over the past month or so, but I'm glad you found it acceptable. That decision was based on an experience June & I had on her 50th birthday trip, where we were made to feel like second class citizens for going to a hotel on a bargain break all inclusive deal and having a terrible choice for the dinner menu. The waiters actually refused to allow us to order from the A La Carte menu as that was for 'full fare' guests! It was demeaning and put a cloud over the whole holiday.

Anyway, do come and stay with us again sometime. If you don't get our monthly news & offers email over the next couple of weeks, let me know and I'll add you to the list manually!

Regards,

June & Dave
