“Wonderful 65th Birthday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2011

I arranged a 5day break to celibrate my wifes 65th Birthday at the Esplanade, it turn out to be such a wonderful trip that we shall return. My tip to guests would be to expect to be on a diet after there stay. Great food and surroundings an ideal centre for touring the beatiful area. The staff could not have done any more to make our stay a wonderful experience. Kindest Regards Ross & Dorothy Vickers

Room Tip: ask for a room as comfortable as the one we had.

“It was a lovely break and we will be back!”

Me and my husband were at the hotel for the weekend of 22nd july ,it was just a quiet break but it was beautiful i can't fault a thing the weather was lovely and as the hotel is on the shore front we had an exellent view down the river clyde from our room .
My only complaint would be the serving of food..... there is far to much as it is a five course meal every night we never managed our cheese and biscuits at the end, the breakfast was very filling aswell .
The staff were all friendly and helpfull and cleanliness of hotel and rooms is above standard , i would recommend this hotel to anyone as the location is perfect for all ages .

Thank you very much for making us feel so welcome.

“Stunning location, vegetarians steer clear!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2011

I was very disappointed with a major aspect of my stay - I'm vegetarian, and felt that the hotel did not cater for me well at all. (I visited with a coach party - the coach operator had been advised of my dietary requirements when I booked.)

Firstly, there was no vegetarian breakfast - rather than the cooked breakfast offered to all other guests, I had to make do with the 'side' dishes, usually only one available at a time: baked beans OR mushrooms OR tomatoes. (The tomatoes were tinned, and clearly cheap.)

Secondly, the evening meal was described as "five-course" but on several occasions there was no vegetarian starter available, and twice the soup course was chicken - no alternative available. Therefore, I paid for a five-course meal every night, but it could not be provided.

Thirdly, re: the main course for the evening meal: I'd like to describe the vegetarian choice but as there was only one main dish suitable for vegetarians each night, it wasn't a *choice* at all! The main courses were extremely poorly judged, and with the exception of a cheese and onion quiche, all served with hot vegetables when salad would have been much more appropriate. Most damningly, I was served the same dish *three times* during my stay - I don't think I'll ever touch vegetable lasagne again.

Fourthly, the hotel advertises Wednesday as a special Scottish night - haggis is served as a starter, and piped then toasted in with great ceremony. Guess what? No vegetarian option for that course at all! So I sat hungry and annoyed through this spectacle, feeling extremely out of place. (Vegetarian haggis is easily and widely available.)

Finally, no menus indicated which items were suitable for vegetarians, so I had to keep asking the over-worked waiting staff to check with the chef. This clearly annoyed them, and also held up service for the other guests. May I suggest that the people producing the menu use the standard "V" to indicate which items are suitable for vegetarians to eat.

I'm torn writing this damning review because in many other respects the hotel was ideal: very close to the waterfront with an immaculately kept garden. However, if I'd known in advance that I was going to eat so badly I would have thought twice about coming here. I paid the same amount for my holiday as everyone else in my party but feel I did not enjoy the same value for my holiday. Vegetarianism is a common dietary choice, and a hotel that wants to attract high ratings really should make more of an effort to cater in a decent manner.

PS I also stayed in infamous Room 42 !! The view was lovely, but the bed had collapsed on the right-hand side. I'm glad I had the room to myself so didn't need to sleep on that side.

Dear Guest

I would like to take this opportunity thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback on Trip Advisor and also to offer you my sincere apologies regarding the issues you have experienced at our hotel.

I would like to reassure you that feedback of this kind is very rare and I have investigated each of your points in detail to ensure that you or any of our other guests do not experience such service again.

Our aim is to ensure that all of our guests come and have an outstanding holiday, and of course your food options are a big part of this.

I have taken the appropriate action in dealing with chefs regarding the menu options they presented you with the week of your stay. I only wish I had been aware of this during your stay as i could have intervened and ensured that you were being presented with the standard and variety of choices the rest of the party were.

I would welcome the opportunity to welcome you back to the hotel once again and show you that this is not a regular occurrence, and that we can get things right. you did mention that you had an enjoyable stay taking this out of the equation and i would like the opportunity to make up for the only downfall in an otherwise enjoyable holiday if you would give another opportunity.

Please do not hesitate to contact us directly if you wish to discuss this in more detail.
In the meantime if there is anything we can do to assist you please do not hesitate to contact us directly at 01369 704070 or please email us at manoj@sgehotels.com.

“Lovely view shame about the breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2011

The position of this hotel right on the esplanade (the clue is in the name of the hotel) is wonderful. The view down the river Clyde from our room was superb and indeed the room itself was clean and comfortable. However it is a typical seaside hotel in that many areas are in need of refurbishment. When we returned at 11 ish after visiting family we decided to have a nightcap in the hotel bar. Five minutes later we were requested by the lady on the bar to turn off the lounge lights when we had finished and she then left. This is the first time I have ever been asked to turn off lights in a hotel and when I returned to my room I had to switch on my mobile phone to give me a little light as the corridor was pitch black. Surely this is not safe. The dining room was nicely furnished BUT the breakfast was terrible (it was like something from the 1970s). We had a choice of juice OR cereal OR fruit OR porridge. I have never known juice to be a course for breakfast. Everything was brought to the table we were not allowed to help ourselves to anything. After seeing a stand where the bowls of fruit and cereal were displayed (very small old-fashioned stainless steel sundae dishes with 3 grapefruit segments in each) we all plumped for the porridge which was actually very tasty but there was barely enough to cover the bottom of the dish. The cooked breakfast was awful with tasteless cheap sausage, very salty bacon, hash brown that tasted like it had been cooked in stale fat, 1 tinned tomato and the only item which was fairly edible was the egg. One of the party requested poached eggs on toast and these arrived just dropped on a plate with NO TOAST(obviously we had to use the toast from the rack). We were given a tiny pot of tea (although we were allowed some more on request) and cheap white toasted bread (no choice for brown). The best thing about the breakfast experience was the young lady serving us, she was run off her feet but was very cheerful. In fact despite all my gripes all of the staff were very welcoming and friendly. I would be pretty dis-satisfied with the food if I had been on a coach tour but having booked this hotel on the internet and paying £50 per person I feel it does not represent good value for money.

Dear Guest,

I would like to thank you for taking the time to leave a review on Trip Advisor.
Your feedback helps us build our business and improve our customer experiences.
I deeply regret that you have not had a pleasant experience at the hotel, as you can see from our previous reviews this is really very rare and I am sorry it has dampened your break away. I would like to reassure you that if you choose to give us another chance we can prove to you that this is an isolated case.
Again we are shocked that the breakfast was not satisfactory as our food always has such wonderful comments. We will address this with our chefs at once and i thank you for bringing it to our attention.
I would be delighted if you would give us another opportunity to serve you and show you that what you have experienced is not regular practice at the Esplanade Hotel.
We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Kindest regards

“Esplanade Hotel, Dunoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2011

Were travelling across the West of Scotland and came across the Esplanade while online. Easy to find, gorgeous rooms and amazing views – must be the best in the town no? Staff were 10/10. Couldn’t have been better. Was only supposed to be there one night and stayed for two. Ate dinner in hotel dining room on first night, it was fresh and plentiful. 2nd night we were told about Rio restaurant in town centre, a sister company to the hotel. Also smashing. 5 stars!
